And those of you lamenting all the fighting in the league but love to remember the '04 cup run... that run was full of fights. I'd argue the flames get nowhere close to the finals without having a roster full of tough SOBs.
You're all a bunch o hypocrites!
Two things can be true at once my guy.

People can look fondly on a time, and still have opinions on culture etc. with different eyes.

Hell, if I couldn't hold two things being true at the same time, as a queer hockey fan, I probably wouldn't watch. It's by far the most socially conservative sport this side of NASCAR.

Yeah, I hadn't really ever looked that up. I decided to look into it when you mentioned it.

I have a feeling the Alberta fans are bringing the NHL's rating down

Interesting chart.

F1 & Nascar seem like at the least should switch spots to me.

I was as die-hard a "Fighting is good for the game! Taking it out will ruin it!" guy as there was out there. As I get older and wiser, and as we learn more about the suffering these men are go through in their 40's and 50's, the more I am opposed to it, and the stronger I feel it's time to let it go, rip the band-aid of, and just ban fighting altogether.

With age comes perspective about what is truly important, and young, strong men filled with testosterone and chasing dollar signs really aren't able to truly understand the future implications of what they are doing to their brains. Their perspective is too slanted to make a truly educated decision. What has especially changed my mind on this is seeing what a good friend of mine, and ex-teammate is going through in his late 40's. He was a goon in the ECHL, and is absolutely paying the price now.

Yes, there was some awesome moments in the past that included fighting. I have many great memories of guys pumped up on adrenaline beating the hell out of each other in high-stakes emotional battles. I've also watched many of those men die way too young as a result to satisfy our blood-lust.

Many men built their careers and wealth being enforcers, goons, pugilists whatever you wanna call them. Good for them, and good for the ones that weren't reduced to husks of men cowering in the fetal position in a dark bedroom. But we need to eliminate this career path in the NHL.

I think you're taking a huge jump between, acknowledging that young men have the urge to fight and being a fan of a misogynistic rapist.

Personally I think it is emotionally healthy for men to acknowledge their urge towards violence. ( not suggesting that 100% of men feel that way) but certainly a large majority of men under thirty express their emotions through physical violence. ( not saying its a good or bad thing), it simply exists. For thousands of years being physically violent is something that was rewarded through food, sex, or social standing. In the last 80 years this isn't the case and expressions of such are frowned upon ( a good thing) . Hockey is a venue for young men to exchange this type of physical communication in a way that is mostly consensual and mostly harmless ( mostly is the key word there are lots of instances where this isn't the case).

Pressuring young men into staged fights for money and status is the issue at hand, and everyone agrees, OP included that this is not healthy or culturally relevant. Now and then I see kids having a scrap and I think nothing of it, it is a normal part of becoming an adult.

Fighting is banned, just like tripping, diving, cross checking. People only do all that because they think they can get away with it or the penalty/reward is worth it.

I'd argue it's already happened. Can't think of one guy in the Flames system who is a "fighter" and can only think of one new guy in the entire league who is making a name for himself through fighting. Obviously fighting still happens, but I can't remember the last time I saw the staged fight you'd see on a regular basis a few years ago.

I agree with this as well. Men are still men. There is a time, place and scenario for a man to be violent and/or dangerous. Defending yourself, protecting your loved ones and all out war are just a few that come to mind. I'm all for beating a child molester or rapist caught in the act within an inch of his life. These are scenarios when a man should step up.

But in what's essentially a gladiator arena designed for no other purpose than to appease the mob... I think we've got to move past that as a society. Where does that leave boxing, MMA this new horror show called professional slap fighting? There is going to be some tough decisions to be made with these sports where the end goal, is to concuss your opponent into unconsciousness.

Good point and you're probably right though I wonder where the NBA ranks.

Guys, this whole thing is a money issue. And it’s not easy to just say “ban fighting!” It’s probably more or less established that hits to the head result in CTE. I’m sure lawyers can argue either way to avoid a lawsuit and that’s fine but there are other considerations. As I pointed out previously there’s a marketing aspect that is associated with fighting and that being attractive to some degree of fans. Even if it happens less these days. Anyway, if fighting is way down, which is a fact, is the CTE issue going forward a mitigated issue as the numbers are down? What about hitting? It’s a contact sport after all? Do you ban that too? What about boxing or the NFL, or UFC, which seem much worse? Why should they be able to continue? It’s just not a quick, “ban it, it doesn’t lead to goals”. That’s totally oversimplifying it. I don’t think anyone thinks Simon and dozens of other deaths related are because of it. It’s almost undeniable. But with mitigating factors such as less fights, requirements to keep helmets on, etc I can understand the nuance of it for the other way too.

Fighting is penalized, not banned. Banning it would mean automatic ejections and suspensions for it.
