Knowing how things have played out for the previous generation when fighting was a lot more common, it feels like watching someone like Matt Rempe fight nearly every night is like watching a long term suicide. He is a player that crosses the line and attracts that, but there are also instances of other players just wanting to fight him because he is big and they want to test themselves. I really feel like there needs to be an intervention of some kind.

The NHL is stuck isn't it? If they make any changes now, won't they lose the lawsuit against them?

Also, I think focusing discussion on personal choice and cognitive ability to make choices isn't the best way to look at it. We make choices within a wider culture and framework that encourages someone or expects someone to make certain choices. Which I think is a more important line of thinking when it comes to CTE in sport.

I love hockey fights. The game is intense, emotions are strong. Men fight for survival, dominance, and personal gain, but they also fight just for fun.
Fighting is natural. Biologicaly we are wired to fight. But I can't stand those staged fights in the NHL.

I was scared every time Ryan Lomberg went on the ice. Went out of his way to get beat up.

I for one cannot walk down the street without starting a fight because, you know, biology.

Uh huh. Cause we don't have self control over biological urges. We've evolved beyond cavemen, but it doesn't mean we don't have urges. Fighting is one of those. Some men might not want to the same as others

I don't think that is the point. The point is that until very recently ( in terms of evolution) fighting was extremely common among young men. culturally, it is no longer socially acceptable ( which is for better). Even killing, it used to be until say 80 years ago, the majority of people killed there own food.
Again, probably for the better, there are not many culturally accepted venues for expressing these natural feelings.

RIP - I think had he played in the modern era he would've been more like a (early) Lucic - feared on the ice for both his skill and toughness, but would not have had to fight as much as he did, and the hits aren't nearly as devastating now.

He said biologically. Not culturally. Hell, hockey culture is the issue here.

It's going to happen at some point. That's inevitable.
So do it now.

Except the NHLPA has to agree, and they have fought in negotiations every single time changes in fighting rules have come up. The only one they lost was on bench clearing brawls.
Ask the NHLPA why they don't agree to outlaw fighting, or ask them why every time there is suspension they stick up for the suspended member BEFORE they ever stick up for the injured member.

How often does a player like Simon come around?
Scores 29 goals in a season and puts up 150 PIMs.
He was mean, scary tough, and a little crazy.
And those of you lamenting all the fighting in the league but love to remember the '04 cup run... that run was full of fights. I'd argue the flames get nowhere close to the finals without having a roster full of tough SOBs.
You're all a bunch o hypocrites!

The closest comparable today is probably Tom Wilson.
