This news breaks my heart.

Loved Simon before he played here and was thrilled when Calgary traded for him.

Condolences to his friends and family.

He was one tough SOB, one of sutters best acquisitions during the 04 run, along with guys like Nieminen and Nilsson.

Really underrated pickup for that run. Big, scary man with decent mitts for both scoring and punching.

I commented on what a beast Chris Simon was during the 2004 season during Kipper's jersey retirement ceremony.

Even in '04 he was underrated for what he brought to the team. Chris was one of the few players who had a soft set of mitts that could score on any goalie, and he could also fight anyone in the league and ragdoll most of his opponents.

Condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all of us who were lucky enough to watch Chris play as he was impossible not to cheer for and admire his unique skill set on the ice.

Gone way too soon and way too young!

You will be missed Chris!

Saw this earlier on TSN. Way too young to be dying. There’s been a few of those lately.

Brutal news.

And yet fighting is still allowed in the NHL as these guys continue to die and take their own lives
Shameful

My favourite goal of his was from the 2005-2006 season.

Link
Pickpockets Morrison from behind, kicks the puck up to himself, and snipes.

He was one of my favourite players in that generation. So representative of what the Flames had - so much toughness and grit, but sneaky skilled too. Such an intimidating presence on the ice as well. It is a sad day today.

Just because he had skills doesn't mean he wasn't a heavyweight. Bob Probert had some on skill and was a legendary heavyweight. Simon and Probert had some evenly fought tilts. Simon took on all the heavyweights.

I'm wondering if you're mixing up the terms heavyweight and goon. Domi and Kocur were pure goons.

Yeah. From a business standpoint I truly think Bettman since coming in has been about pushing it out of the game. But from a marketing standpoint I think a lot of American fans still associate the uniqueness of fighting with hockey so they don’t want to outwardly ban it. But at the very least they should ban the preconceived Reeves type fights where they talk about it before hand. So silly. And fighting should have a higher time off the ice rather than the five it currently carries. I do believe they’re trying to push it out though.

And some people don’t really understand why so many people are upset with Rempe fighting so much. I know that I’m watching this kid trying his best to hang onto his dream job, but knowing full well that it’s gonna go how it went for most enforcers I watched growing up. Once you’re old enough to have witnessed the beginning, middle, and end… it’s pretty gruelling to sit through the exact same thing again.

Yup we are basically watch a kid potentially kill himself just to entertain people, it’s sickening. We know better by now.

Who's forcing him? Granted, Rempe is a young man but it'd be pretty disingenuous to say he is unaware of the risks himself.

Whether fighting should be banned is another discussion. As the rules allow he'll get five minutes per fight and it is his prerogative to fight to fire up his teammates or himself. I don't like it either but he is making his own choices, who's going to stop him?

That was a stupid turn of phrase in this thread, first of all. Second, yes, we are all aware it’s only a 5 minute penalty under the rules. Third, the posters were talking about people actually encouraging and cheering this on, not about who is going to stop him. Maybe if people weren’t so bloodthirsty about fights he wouldn’t need to be stopped. Fourth, it’s probably not his own choice entirely. This is what he seemingly has to do to stay in the league. Or did you think he was drafted and got a call up because of his hockey skills?

You are right. I've amended my post.

Yeah it seems his skill level isn't high enough to stay in the league, so he needs to bring a physical edge. That's the playstyle he's developed as he chases a fulltime role on an NHL club. But my central point is it's his choice - he isn't being forced. Therefore he will live with the consequences.

Which part is not his choice?

And as Flames fans, he's in another conference and only plays the Flames twice per season. Does it bother you enough to boycott those two games?

My entire point is that the choice exists at all.
