I don't think you understand what you're saying. So yes, we are clearly done here.

I do.

Well... I mean... it's their company they can get involved in anything they want if they so choose. But I don't see any more wisdom in them being involved in the decision to pay people not to play here then I would in them being involved in the reverse.

If they're going to delegate operational authority to someone else then they should delegate operational authority to someone else. Set the budget and let the people you obstensively trust to run the business do it. You're never "paying someone to not play here" you're reallocating funding from "Asset A" to "Asset B".

Smaller but far more talented Joe Colborne. Could be our first line centerman next year and I personally think his floor is 600g 1300pts

Cool. Flames management and scouts (the people who know that they are doing) clearly saw something in Sharangovich and made the move for him. For the same reasons I trust them with some of their more recent acquisitions, I am going to choose to trust them on the non acquisitions as well. Maybe they just aren’t all that interested in Holtz as the primary piece coming back for a goaltender who by all metrics is having a fantastic season and still has two years remaining on his deal.

Or maybe they just had way more interest in Mercer and wanted the centremen?

They could have liked both of them.

Once you exceed those levels the deal must be signed off above Conroy (probably Maloney) or by the ultimate authority, who in this case is the ownership team. Everyone has limits and everyone has a boss to answer to, even the CEO or COTB. The GM will have guiderails in place to limit the potential damage they can do, especially a first year GM. It's why Maloney and Nonis have jobs with the Flames. It's why Bean is involved at all. I'll give you credit, I never thought we would actually see an honest to goodness appeal to "authority" defense invoked in an argument.
Conroy does not have to go to anyone to make deals, that has been confirmed by Steinberg who is more connected to the team than any of us.

I would be shocked if every single GM in the league didn't have to get some sort of approval for huge trades and signings. It's just a proper business practice at that point. And it's in line with what all the insiders have been saying about every team for years. And why have a President of Hockey Operations if they have no authority.
Conroy obviously has some autonomy, but there must be limits as well.

We know this team needs centres, and wants centres in the 24 year old range, so maybe we should start speculating who might be targeted. We don't need Frank for that, do we?

On offer; a Vezina calibre starter, picks, lots of wingers, lots of depth defensemen.

Sure, maybe they like Holtz but the bottom line is, they don’t love him or the deal would be done.

I wonder if Buffalo has given up on Krebs. He’s behind 3 youngish centres already.

There’s so much competition for centres and a lot of teams looking.

And they have Thomson, Cozens and Zach Benson down the middle. Plus a few high draft centre prospects.

I doubt he’s even a big star, but he could blossom somewhere else a bit more. He’s a local kid as well.

No idea. I do remember Steinberg saying he has full permission to do any retention himself though.
