But man ... Miromanov's early returns have been something. Consistently some of the best results on the team while playing big minutes. Takes a ton of shots. Hasn't given up much at all. He's a project, but IMO already a really good find for this management group.
|
We appreciate your restraint in not making a new "Daniil Fricken Miamanov" thread, or changing your avatar to him which would be the true kiss of death. He has to get a few more games, or dare I say seasons, under his belt before he can reach the lofty heights of career journeyman David Jones.

If that was the case a future team in Salt Lake City would pay huge to acquire him.

Shiny penny syndrome has always been huge on this board. Hanifin did well here.

Nobody knows, but I think that if he had stayed, Johnny would have been one of the highest scoring Flames ever and would have eventually had his jersey retired in Calgary. Lindholm would have continued to be a 65+ point guy last year and this year. I think Chucky would have still left though.

Agree with you about Johnny. I do think Tkachuk would have stayed though. Seemed like a close group of guys that could have been on the cusp of a deep run.

Did he? Define "well". He was awful in the playoffs. Edmonton beat him in like a rented mule. He was soft and our worst defenseman in that series.
Outside of this season where he is playing for a contract I would give him a C. Not bad or maybe even well, but good riddance to him. He will be overpaid and I am glad it's not the Flames overpaying him. He will be back to his vanilla self next season once he gets paid.

I don't recall any of the Flames' players being good defensively in that series.

Really? We outplayed edmonton. If it wasn't for Hanifin and Markstrom we easily win that series.
Plenty of players played well defensively that series. Hanifin was by far our worst player.

I remember having a similiar argument with some friends about lindholm. They were adamant we HAD to sign him last off season. I was of the opinion you trade him and their argument was who is going to play center for the Flames?
My simple response is 31 other teams don't have Elias Lindholm and they are doing just fine at center. Overpaying old players rarely ever works unless they're a freak like Pavelski.
Hanifin isn't old but the Flames will be just fine without him. 31 teams don't have Hanifin and last I checked 16 of them are going to make the playoffs. Something he has rarely done in his career.
He played 12 playoff games in 2022 with the Flames and finished a - player in 10 of those games. Being a + player one game.

You don't give up 25 goals in five games by playing well defensively. If you think the Flames outplayed the Oilers, your memory is failing you badly.

Naw I remember clearly. We outplayed them. Not that Corsi is the absolute tell all in a game but calgary out corsied them every single game.
The worst D pairings by expected goals both had Hanifin on it. Hanfiin and Andersson got eaten alive that series. Follow by a small sample size of hanifin and Tanev. Rest of the team playes really well outside of Markstrom.

Well, Gaudreau is already 5th all time already, and would be 4th about 90 points out of 3rd even with his anemic point totals from Columbus

One thing that gets missed, Hanifin wasn't it always a consistent player. It was the Flames that molded him into one. If Conroy could Spot more gems, we could develop defensman and parlay the into solid picks or trades.

His legacy as a Flame is pretty solid as-is, but I don't think it's too outlandish to say that if Johnny stuck with the Flames, and had 3-5 more solid point producing years, he would've been on his way to a jersey retirement.

Haven't dug into the game stats but I imagine that is Hanifin/Andersson/Tanev being primarily out against McDavid and Drai and the other pairings being out against the rest of the scrubs that make up that team?

Disagree. The fancy stats supported the Flames in that series outside of game 3 where they were dominated. Markstrom let in some of the softest goals ever in that series and the team was afraid once the Oilers were on the rush.
2 games blown where they lead by 2 and another blown when they came back from 3-0 to tie the game. Flames undoubtedly should have won every home game in that series. Goaltending sunk them no doubt about it
