I find it funny more people find being a dick more egregious than being obtuse or wrong.

Because people are wrong all the time and make mistakes. I don’t see that as a big deal? CP is like a big conversation and it’s a community. People come here to chat about things and discuss things. People are going to be wrong about things, and I don’t think that’s the end of the world. It’s no need to be condescending and ignorant toward people though.

Absolutely being a dick is worse than being wrong. Maybe not worse than intentionally obtuse though, but I don’t think that’s what’s happening.

Fact is it actually just weakens their entire position anyway. Now people get their back up and focus on the tone and dickishness instead of the content you’re trying to explain.

If timun just explains the position without the dickishness, the content and argument is what gets focused on and he’s got a strong one so likely changes some minds. Instead it’s like, nah, #### you man.

The line between what’s intentionally obtuse and what isn’t seems pretty murky considering at this point we mostly have the same conversations and the same people have things explained to them repeatedly and never, ever change their position on anything even when people who actually know what they’re talking about have explained the issue to them directly.

People are babies. So what if someone is rude. We’re all adults.

Nah, don’t be a dick. Pretty simple.

Nah, don't continue to be stupid. Especially when it's been explained numerous times. Pretty simple.

Inherently the claim is that they folks knowledgable in their domain should exhibit infinite patience. It's fine if the person with incorrect opinions just stops posting. It gets aggravating, when the person keeps spouting things already been debunked. It inherently says that this person's stupidity should continue to be catered to. Politely.

Welll it’s interesting that you mention that. The person who works in the domain (to say least!) is bunk. You didn’t see him roll in here and be a dick though. That’s how grown ups have discussions.

But whatever. Like Mr. Coffee noted, it just diminishes their position anyway. No one is “coming to your way” of thinking when you behave that way, and it erodes any credibility you had.

Slava, you're one of the worst people here for acting like a stubborn mule being dragged to the proverbial trough full of crystal clear water and absolutely, positively refusing to drink a drop of it. Throughout this discussion you kept prattling on about your property value going down because of densification, and I and others repeatedly told you that's completely false, and what was your ultimate conclusion?

"You don't have any issue admitting being wrong"? Are you kidding? You get indignant when people react with the attitude "Fine then jackass, don't drink from the trough," and then you complain you're still thirsty! You're the embodiment of:

Do you have any idea how incredibly ####ing rude that is to everyone who attempts to converse with you?

PepsiFree summarizes above better than I could. "We mostly have the same conversations and the same people have things explained to them repeatedly and never, ever change their position on anything." I don't think it could be said more succinctly. People like you repeat the same stupid adages over and over, nothing anyone ever tells you sinks in, and when your recalcitrance becomes so repugnant that people won't stand it anymore... you act righteously indignant!

Are you going to apologize for your pigheaded refusal to pay attention to what anyone else tells you? Is flamesfever going to apologize for the blatantly xenophobic remarks that precipitated this discussion? No? Until you do you can shove your indignation right back in the orifice from whence it came.

I feel that we need a "shadow banning timun" thread to discuss if there is any merit to having him here. It is probably time to vote him off the island.

I like CP because the same people who are like “don’t be mean to be, abrasive words are NOT OK” will also turn around and blame immigrants and poor(er) people for ruining their neighbourhoods.

Like, don’t call someone who is being stupid, “stupid,” but if you want to hate immigrants… that’s cool.

Borrowing from Slava: fill your boots.

Either way I'll add a few irredeemable people to the ol' ignore list.

The frustrating part is the fact that the federal government policies are making it easy to scapegoat immigrants by ignoring the basic math of housing availability while bringing in unsustainable numbers of people.

Housing starts in Canada are ~ 150,000 to 250,000 per year. But you're bringing a million plus per year with no plan or support. No, housing starts are not going to materially increase in the near or even the medium term without a plan in place and massive funding. And even then it'll MAYBE reach 300,000 in a good year even though that hasn't been remotely historically close? If current Canadians are literally not having kids, you're expecting new immigrants to pile in at least 4-6 per home. Likely a much higher ratio than that just to stay above water. No #### housing isn't within reach.

As an immigrant and a visible minority, it's ridiculous and so stupid watching this unfold. Frustrating as ####. Frankly, it's not surprising that people are blaming new immigrants to some degree. Is it ideal or nice or correct? No, but totally understandable.

####, the current Housing minister was originally the Immigration minister who basically created the policies that is blowing up in his face. They were even warned by internal studies about it, but just ignored it anyhow.

You might as well light your hair on fire and beat it out with a shovel over and over again.

I think part of the solution probably needs to be supporting job creation in smaller cities. I think it's quite likely somewhere like Medicine Hat could ramp up their home building quite substantially if there was demand, and it isn't like they'd run out of prairie.

The problem is there are a lot less supports for immigrants and jobs in these places, so it's rational for them not to go there. But I wonder if adding funds to support settlement in Medicine Hat might be easier (aka actually achievable) than building thousands of units of subsidized housing in Vancouver.
