The more that comes to light about all of this, the more I’m starting to think that nothing was really eminent and the leak came from the Devils side of things in an attempt to put pressure on Conroy

Ah yes, I can see this will be yet another instance where the unverified speculation will lead to everyone just simply believing what they want to believe and then pushing that narrative for years to come.

Drafting a #1 C is typically easier than prying one from another team. Not easy, easier.
It is unclear if Mercer will even amount to a #1 C and the Devils are clinging to him.

Doubt most of the posters here see him Sas a long term 1C solution.
More of a 70 point 1RW/top tier 2C.
Great player with great potential but likely only slightly higher to Zary in terms of absolute top end production.

Friedman mentioned on the spitting chiclets podcast that the deal was in place and the Flames backed out thinking they were back in the playoff hunt. .
He wasn't speculating either seemed like he had a good source.

Brutal if it’s true. Math was pretty clear it wasn’t happening. Especially when you accounted for the terrible defense post deadline. I just hope it’s angry New Jersey spin.

More baloney than Maloney.
The rumours were out there but it’s been pointed out that they didn’t line up with the timeline nor how Conroy/Maloney operate/what they’ve said.
If anything, it was more likely put out there to add pressure to New Jersey since they were playing the same game.

highly doubt it, the Flames traded 5 pending UFAs...not sure how much more evidence people need they weren't "going for it"

Yeah. The only small part of that believes it is the sec post about not playing to lose and it’s also Edwards and how he has run the team. More emotional damage than anything else lol

Yeah possibly. I just listened to the episode now and was actually shocked at what he said. I was under the assumption it was the cap retention what was the issue. Friedman also mentioned he had heard it was the cap retention then he heard a deal was done and calgary backed out thinking they were in a playoff push now.
I hope that's not true. But even if Markstrom is on this team next year we can still trade him at the deadline next season.

The markstrom deal that was reportedly done was way before the deadline.

One of the insiders here says they have a good handle on the story. We will find out, but Maloney nixing the deal makes no sense on the timeline, logic or what we know about Conroy's deals.

So were most of Conroy's UFA trades.

Friedman never said Maloney. And honestly don't see why Friedman would make that up. He is one of the most respected insiders in the NHL.

He doesn’t make stuff up but he passes along things he hears from a variety of sources. It’s rumor and speculation not fact

Yeah I didn't say it was fact. Mentioned it was Friedman who said it. I would believe him over any other insider. He definitely gets some stuff wrong so hopefully this is one of those times.

Nothing I have heard indicates management or Maloney pulled the plug on the Markstrom trade.

I think what people are saying is that it doesn’t even need to have anything to do with him “getting it wrong.” He likely heard that from a reputable source, but that doesn’t mean it’s the actual truth any more than it means that’s the message the reputable source wanted to get out.
