It actually wasn't dumb in some applications, for example a smallish bedroom where you're always going to be in basically the same position when watching the thing. Same reason curved monitors make sense.
There are some and they can work for a single person. They suck in a living room with multiple seating locations.

Amazon mostly makes money from AWS. A little bit from retail. Prime is a gigantic money sink since making movies and episodic media requires a ton of upfront capital (from AWS, natch) and are incredibly risky.

Reddit is another ad delivery/data mining platform. Same as Meta.

None are examples of "subsidized by venture capital and the promise of future profitability". In fact this model is basically gone these days. You get a massively crippled free product and to get anything truly useful you need to pay.

As someone that uses some SAAS products, many subscription prices have gone way up.
That’s the point. The model of subsidized by venture capitalists to build users by providing a good experience is gone. So now en####ification to reduce losses / maximize revenues through monopoly powers.

The gear grinder boils down to people don’t subsidize my lifestyle anymore. It sucks but it was the inevitable conclusion to that particular phase of growth.

If you look to AI now it’s cool and being subsidized. It too will be en####ified.

iPhone memory inflation. Not sure if its a thing but I refuse to upgrade this POS iphone. I have barely a page and a half of apps. 64GB add nothing, no photos, but every day I have to delete something else. Delete whasapp convos, imessage attachments.

I swear this is to make me upgrade the phone. Never has memory. Can't even back it up because my IOS is too old and it tells me to go in to the store. FATA OFF!. So tempted to go android or samsung but I am so balls deep in the Apple world, It will probably P me off.

Sadly, no, curved screens are no longer a thing for TVs.

I f--king loved my 55" Samsung KS8500 (that my ex took in the divorce, whatever). The curve added this subtle sense of depth, even in a big living room setup with a wider viewing angle. Plus the curve helped reduce how noticable any glare from other light sources was by bending it across more of the picture, making it less intense in any one spot.

I dont know about TVs, but I have a curved monitor at my office.

I have a triple-monitor 'pyramid' formation setup and I put the curved monitor on top.

As has been said, if theres multiple seating locations it would probably suck, but for a computer monitor where you're largely a single person and stationary I love it.

It might take some time, but I think curved TVs are dead because the future will sooner or later become this:

A curved TV bracket for this might be an interesting concept. It'd be also super cool to be able to have one person obtain, transport and install a 75+ inch TV. Kinda like the ability to do so with bed in a box vs traditional mattresses.

Is anyone else just done with daylight savings conversations? Actual daylight savings? I could take it or leave it and I see points on both sides.

But for me when someone mentions it's coming up I don't dread the event, I dread the constant conversations and whining for the next two weeks. It's just takes over on this stupid level.

When the veterinarian or someone refers to you as "dad" - or forever worse, "daddy" - while talking to your pet about you.

"Oh, now you can go home with daddy. We're all done here" or "Dad's here, it's all ok. Aren't you excited to go home with daddy today? Daddy's here" during the outtake procedure with my cat.

Holy Hanna is that creepy as all hell. I'm not my pet's "daddy". We aren't going home to affix the latex and have a spank. Nor did I #### a cat and have a child, although I understand how many people observe how lonely I may have been lo these many, many, many years.

I don't #### cats, and I don't care what the "professionals" have to say.

You just added a new holiday to the late happy new year wishes list. Expect a PM on the fall.

You mention not ####ing cats so much that I can’t be the only one here wondering if you do.

It would be low class and tasteless to make a joke incorporating the alternate name for a cat. I will leave it to Fotze2.

AI isn't subsidized at all really. Sure there's VC funding but cripes running models is EXPENSIVE. OpenAI is a MSFT thing now.
