From Jan 28th to now, the Flames have gained 5 positions in the standings. They're currently picking 14th. Fortunately, they're still only 2ish points out from picking 8th. Every loss at this point relative to the competing tanks is basically worth a 3rd rounder or so.
Vegas is 8 points clear now, playoffs aren't happening. Get the best pick you can now.

‘Get the best pick you can’ is not a consideration for the guys actually playing the games. Everybody knows this, except for those peculiar fans who think the object of the game is to lose lots and draft high.

The Flames without Markstrom are still not as bad as San Jose (28 points back) or Chicago (30 points back). There are some scary terribad teams in the NHL this year.

I think traptor means if the Flames had been without Markstrom all season. At any rate, that's the hypothetical I was going for.
The thing is, even being that bad doesn't give you good odds of the top-3 pick that the scorched-earth fans say is so essential. The only way to guarantee yourself a top-3 pick is to finish dead last. Anything else, the odds are against you.
