I'm curious to know whether Vegas had this trade set up for a few days and left it until the end so that other contending teams wouldn't have time to react.

Me too. But I've been called out endlessly around here for saying so. Oh well.

Shows how significant retaining on for multiple years is. 6 years of retention is pretty ridiculous, getting a 1st and best prospect is a good return.

It's why Markstrom retained for 2 additional full years shouldn't come cheap.

Edit: With the 3rds going the other way, this no longer looks that good!

You realize SJ sent 2 3rds right? and retained for 6 years
It's not great for them IMO

Wait, so the deal is 2025 1st + Edstrom for Hertl retained + 3rd + 3rd.

That's not a good return at all for retaining on Hertl.

Kelly McCrimmon is a wolf among sheep. It might blow up in his face. But he's never shy to do anything to improve the team.

I like what San Jose did and was kind of hoping the Flames would on one of their deals.

Send a mid-round pick back to try to get a more premium asset.

And feels like that's what they kind of did to get Edstrom here (although retaining for 6 years is tough, but probably still better than paying Hertl $8M for the next 6 years).

Once Vegas current run ages out they're going to be really bad for a good stretch of time. I expect they'll keep trading futures the next couple deadlines too.

I'm getting sick of the LTIR and retention deals. I can't blame deals for taking advantage of the situation, it just feels like a competitive advantage for certain (big market) teams.

Will this be something addressed in the next CBA, or is it something that they will always let slide?

They are retaining for six years and had to pay multiple 3rds is bonkers.

I must have missed Hanifin having six years left on his deal.

H Lindholm is the comparable you keep on grumbling about. he got an extra second and a filler prospect.

McCrimmon is a mad man. This dude must get so many seritonin/dopamine rushes coming to work everyday.

More than likely you are right, but if Hanifin walks, Hertl and Stone's injuries are not getting better. AP will be 36+

Eichel on the last year of his deal probably at a steal of a contract though.

I could see them hitting a wall especially if they do this again next year.

Marchessault is 33 and has nearly 30 goals and could be gone next year
Theodore is a UFA in 25, likely gets a big raise.
Hill is a UFA likely gets a raise.

Any team that spends like this will age out and have nobody coming at some point.

Not in 2026. They will be sellers as they sit at the bottom of the NHL standings.

On paper, this should create a monster threat in the west.

And yet, the way they're playing leaves much to be desired. They'll have to turn things around in a big way.

This helps Vegas win a round (please be Edmonton) and convert the Flames 3rd into a 2nd. At the same time weakening Vegas for the future when the Flames will want to pass them by.

win/win

Two 3rds and $8M retained for two late firsts. That’s a heavy price.

Any team can do the LTIR thing. They just have to be good enough that missing a top player won't have them missing playoffs. No trade clauses would be the one thing I'd get rid of if I could snap my fingers.

I dont see how this is better return
Flames now get 26 unprotected

SJ gave up 2 picks and 6 years retention
Hanifin deal is better IMO
