Because players like him, he's a good team player, because he can still be traded if he waives, and because he deserves to not be shopped hard if he signed a NMC.
The doom and gloom and unhappiness about not actively trying to lose is weird.

I find it funny how so many posters suggest trade Markstrom now, we just dealt Hanifin and Tanev, Markstrom's save percent is going to drop.
Allen sucks because he has a .892 save percent.
Montreal is rebuilding. Any chance Allen plays better on a good team?
Give up a 3rd maybe a 2nd and get a goalie at less than $2 mil vs play way too much for Markstrom. We pushed too hard and lost a good trade partner.

Neither does Allen. He lost the crease to Montembault and Primeau. Sometimes when absolute studs like that come up you lose the crease 5 months after you signed a two year contract and then your team is willing to eat almost 2 million dollars in real salary. Happens to the best of goalies.

Mike Johnson panning the move, as they should be.

… why are you twisting yourself into knots convincing yourself that the Flames did the wrong thing here? This thread is bonkers.

This is a really weird trade... If it's to make the playoffs, Daws is 3.32 and .892, so the same and actually a touch worse.

I don’t think it’s weird at all. The Flames aren’t a good team and have nothing in the pipeline that will change their fortunes. They need a couple young centres with #1 upside and best way to do that is by picking in the top 3. Keeping Markstrom and going from a 3rd overall to a 8th overall is dumb and has an outside chance of handing Montreal a pick in the 11th-15th overall range.

Yes, the point is he had to play better than a back up and they still don’t have a true number one for them to lose that condition

This is like when we got a 2nd for Reto Berra lol.
Jersey fans are saying he’s gonna be their backup for cheaper than VV next season and pay a bit for someone to take VV off their hands so they can still go for a starter. Still. Strange moves.

So they should just bench Markstrom. And Kadri. And Weegar. Play black aces all year instead.

Seems really obvious this doesn’t take them out of the Markstrom sweepstakes.
Cheap cost, Fitz gets to say “look I tried this season”, and with the retention it’s still very easy to add Markstrom in the off season.
Allen would be a solid back up too.

Vanacek is as good as Allen. NJ is a good offensive team. They are not a good defensive team especially wihtout Hamilton.

I am starting to understand why it may have been difficult for Conroy to negotiate with Fitz. How do you negotiate with someone who lacks rational thought? Fitz clearly doesn't know if they are coming or going. He seems to be just making random moves to make it seem like he is doing something.
