Clearly. He is expendable for the Devils and not wanted by the Flames. Suspect he was offered to Nashville and they decided to pass.

Even if you go in with a hard on for Mercer you have to recognize how good an asset that Holtz is and take that piece to move the team forward. They skip that they will run into more competition during the summer and Markstrom's value will plummet.

I think the scouts don’t think much of Holtz. So if that’s the case why settle for him? Not being snarky or anything because I do agree now is the time to cash in on Markstroms highest value, but I don’t know why we’d settle for something we don’t believe in? For the record I don’t know either Holtz or Mercer’s upsides.

That Bob McKenzie clip was pretty alarming. If it is true that New Jersey met the Flames price and they did not move Markstrom because of the level of play of the team, then I am stunned at the short-sightedness of management and ownership. Well, maybe not stunned but annoyed that they didn't learn from Iginla experience.
They are 6 points back of VGK and I really don't think there is a realistic chance of catching them. Besides, they just strengthened that team by moving Hanifin there. Bizarre.

Probably has about the same value that Sven had when the Flames traded him?
The Flames had one team (Van) offer a 2nd. The rest of the league wasn't willing to offer even that.
Talented kid. Great hands. Tons of holes in his game.

I see a lot of baseless claims about Markstroms value right now vs. off-season. So... after NJ throws away their season due to bad goaltending, all the sudden the ask for Markstrom is going to come down for them 2 months later because.... reasons? Methinks posters are just whiny because they want to see a trade go down today.

Yeah, Flames doesn't seem very interested in Holtz at all, or they should be able to come up with a trade. We know that Fitzgerald doesn't mind trading his ass.

It’s likely 3 things.
1. People are still looking for the symbolic, show me were tanking. Trading Markstrom now ticks that box.
2. People are undervaluing Markstrom and think we have a magic window now where teams will be fooled he’s good.
3. Trades are fun

Conroy said he ain't going to Markstrom unless a trade is offered that blows him out of the water. He's stuck to his guns all season.
I don't see him changing his mind today just because a couple fans on CP are antsy about trade value.

Exactly.
When a trade that was this close, that is so perfectly fit for both teams, continues for 4 weeks without any resolution, on one single sticking point, it's safe to say that sticking point is huge.
Obviously, both Conroy AND Fitzgerald think that Mercer is substantially better than Holtz. If either one of them thought the gap wasn't that big (like many fans here think), that GM would have found a way to compromise, and bridge that gap

And all the goalies who they claim will be available offseason are also available now, and teams aren't giving them to NJ.
I think there will be (a) teams who crap out in the POs because of bad goaltending (Toronto/Colorado/Edmonton/Flyers come to mind) and (b) teams who miss the POs because of bad goaltending or think they can finally make the POs with good goaltending (NJ, Caps, Sabres) who will be in play.

I haven’t seen the clip. Did he say they met flames price last night or when the supposed trade was to go down 2 weeks ago?
The flames price is mercer and I doubt fitz caved on that last night.

If it is Holtz and a second which it kind of seems like, you hold your cards.
He may not be worth more in the off season and it may be a complicated deal to make what with his being pissed, but it's not enough.
It's important to understand that NJ likes him head and shoulders above other goalies. When Fitz and their analytics team have their exit meetings, I think it's fair to say their jobs will be placed in the balance based on next year's results.
It's easy to see that Brodeur is on the acquire Markstrom side of things and his sway will increase with the failure of the team this year.

Also, checking Markströms stats shows he's actually pretty consistent in relation to GAA over the years. Last year is actually a bit of a outlier and not indicative of a every other year performer. You can assume he'll play well next year, and be a hot commodity for a team lacking adequate goaltending come deadline. And having a great goaltender is not a bad thing when icing a inexperienced lineup. Methinks.
I like it for Conroy to drive a hard bargain with NJ.

The Devils may have met Conroy's price but not ownership's price. The Dreger report recently made it clear that the Flames require Mercer and a higher pick. That could explain the differences between the Dreger report and the McKenzie report.
