If the Flames want Mercer and a first for Markstrom, there's no way the Leafs can even come close to that.

I’d go Marky for Mercer straight up
I don’t think he wants to be here after this season anyways

There’s a 0.000001% chance the Devils move Mercer for Markstrom.

True, but if it becomes clear that Mercer is off the table no matter what and Conroy likes something Toronto has it gives him the option to pivot.

Yeah to me this screams intentional leak to try and tip NJ's hand into caving. Similar to the previous report that NJ would be willing to "proceed without retention", but leaving out the part where their offer was significantly worse without retention. It makes it look like Calgary is the issue.
This is a return volley by Calgary to say the deal is right there for the taking if NJ will only meet the offer.

That's a bold proclamation, not sure I would go that far. As a matter of fact I would say 50-50 is more like it.

I can't see Fitz moving Mercer for Markstrom 50% retained, let alone Mercer+.

Doesn't matter what ppl think. Flames want Mercer or it doesn't happen. Up to the Devils, balls in their court. Need a Vezina caliber goalie for two years? That's the cost of acquisition.

I can see the ownership/management rationale to publicly be optimistic. If you say “we think we can win”, you add more interest/excitement and may get a few more people out to the game. If you say “we’re packing it in” then who is going to buy a ticket? That makes sense to me. As a leader you need to convey optimism and hope to your employees and your constituents to get results. I don’t believe The Flames are in the same financial position or marketing position as The Rangers and can take out a full page in the newspaper and say “we’re going to suck now to be better soon” without it hurting.
 |
I don't believe this is true at all in Calgary. Everyone who even has mediocre knowledge of hockey knows the Flames need to rebuild and are a very long shot to make the playoffs this season. They don't need to sell false hope to educated hockey fans. Flames fans are on board for rebuilding.

Even with the Devils probably trading Toffoli? Interesting I would have thought that would have been the death knell

They might get more for Markstrom than right now if the offers for Markstrom aren’t good enough.

Why people state this stuff like fact, I don’t know. I don’t see any reason why offers couldn’t be the same or better in the summer.

If the Devils give us Mercer for Markstrom I’ll buy the frog a celebratory meal.
