Maybe, but it wouldn't be hard to prove if a bunch of GM's who are not in the best mood from the conversation say an agent told them not to bother trading for a player because he doesn't want to go there.

I mean, the leafs would be fools not to put a Vezina calibre goalie in that lineup.

Other than the Henrique deal, Conroy has been doing just fine IMO. Lindholm trade might be the best trade around the deadline.
The problem is expectation of fans seems to be way off. We all want that deal the expedites the rebuild by 2 years, not happening.
If we want the rebuild to take less time, trade Markstrom now and get the best return you can. These pieces aren't near as valuable as playing this patient game that has us with a terrible roster and picking 14th OV.
late 1sts vs 2nds and 3rds aren't a whole lot different. No Mercer, no 1st but we get Vanecek and 2 2nds, I still do it so we can move on with the new guys.

Sometimes deals just fall apart because the two sides can't agree to the final terms.
Conroy said the issue was about communication. So Markstrom thought there was a deal, but it hadn't been finalized. It's not complicated.
|
Accounts say Conroy and the Devils thought they had a deal - that the Flames got enough for retention. And when he took it upstairs for sign-off, Maloney said no.
That could have been because Maloney is older and wiser. Or maybe Maloney’s orders from Edwards were that he didn’t want to carry retention beyond this season. But if the hockey guys really felt needed to, they could retain - they had better be sure to make the other team pay through the nose for it (which by all accounts, is how Edwards approaches deals). So the deal falls apart on retention.
A week and a half later, the now more desperate Devils come back and take the retention out of the deal. But now Edwards sees a glimmer of hope for the playoffs, and balks.
The thing that gets me is that you’ve got a valuable asset with a NMC, and he waives for a deal. That was your opening. Closing the door on that could come back to bite you in the ass. Hard. As we’ve just seen with Hanifin, when a player decides they’re leaving, he looks out for number 1. If the Flames prefer to move Markstrom in the summer, they hand a huge amount of leverage to a guy who has no interest in how good the return is to the Flames.

Would be ideal if we could somehow include Mangiapane in the package for an even better return.

Good news for more suitors, but if what Dreger says is correct it’s not a problem with the offers, but a problem with upper management wanting to move him.

They don't have anywhere near the salary room. They'd have to trade us Brodie and then they'd be short on the back end pretty substantially (he's playing top pair right now.)
Reaves ++ for a retained markstrom (75%) is what they can hope for without hurting themselves I guess.

Well things have changed since then if that reasoning was accurate, the team is not as close to a playoff spot.

|
Yeah, but what if Markstrom wants to move to NJ because he wants to live in the NY metropolitan area? Then he tells Conroy he'll only waive for NJ; then all that leverage is gone. We don't know Markstrom's motivation to waive for NJ. Plus, how many contenders will need a goalie in the offseason? Hence Flames risk losing control as it happened with Hanifin.

What the hell could the Leafs do for Markstrom??? That's a lot of cabbage to clear to make room. And they don't have that kind of future flexibility.

I’d assume we’d have to take Samsonov back.
Do they have any A or B level prospects to go along with a first rounder?

That would not be tampering. His client has a NMC. He says that his client is unwilling to move it except for one team. Does not necessarily need to name which team he is willing to move it for.

It'd be like,
Brodie
Samsonov
Filler
That'd be the tree offer
