Default WARNING: Do not use your credit cards at the bar

So I was at Melrose on the weekend, and got 2 drinks that came out to be 10 bucks and change and paid something something like 12 bucks in total (ok please leave out the TOTF is cheap comments haha) with my mastercard.

This lunch hour I open up my statement and see it was $14.01. Fantastic. Now it is only 2 bucks but I feel I have no choice but to go down there and raise a stink just because that bartender ripped me off. I really hope she is working there too when I get down there.

ing bitch.

Sorry about the language. But this stuff is happening too much.

you really think that anyone there is going to care about $2 overcharge?

consider it a life lesson that only cost $2 - not to use your credit card in a bar

This is why I don't like the new "2 receipt" system that most POS terminals use. I liked having a carbon copy of what I wrote down, not just me writing whatever I wanted to on my copy of it.

Back in my younger days, reviewing my Visa statement was the only way to tell which bars I had been to.

A $2 tip on a 10 bucks is totally reasonable, there should be no reason anyone thinks your cheap.

I don’t have VISA and the main reason is because of bars

If I where at a bar (which seems to happen often) and had a VISA it would be nothing but bad news…mainly me being way to drunk and spending way to much money…I have seen so many of my friends spend ridiculous amounts of money at the bar on there credit cards and not even remember the next day

Ever think that you could just get a visa and leave it at home when you go to the bar?

Yeah I have…but the idea of credit card have never really appealed to me I have always been raised with the notion that you pay off you debits right away and you never spend money you don’t have, so I just prefer to save up for whatever I want to buy and than get it…now of course I haven’t made any major purchases… (Houses, new cars etc.)

Like I said I have just seen way too many of my friends and family compile a ton of debt at the bars or casino, or the mall or something like that

Generally, any restaurant with a tipping function with overcharge as a temporary authorization just to make sure they are covered. Then when the actual charges go through, it goes down. Are you sure that's the actual charge, or is that just a temporary authorization?

Oh yeah. i worked for Visa a few years back. Not sure if they still do this or not but if you dispute a charge under $20, we would tell you we would investigate it but we just end up writing it off. It costs more money to do a chargeback. hehe

I second this. Do you still have the receipt? Or maybe you wrote the 2 like a 4 on the tip line because you're too drunk

I figured this was common sense.

Places around Stampede time, or on busy nights, (used to anyways, maybe changed, its been a while) have you setup a $100 tab (instead of just paying for the $25 round of drinks) and charge it against the card. If you only spend 60$ and close the tab, you get $40 credited. That's assume you have the willpower and brain cells left to remember.

Of course, the hope is the convience of having a tab will put you up to and over 100$ pdq, and as the drinks go, the mind goes, so that the tab gets to that level. Plus, when you're at $150, if the unscrupulous bartender or some guy around you realizes it, a couple extra drinks that you or no one you knew orders show up on the tab.

When you manage to scratch an x for your signature a couple hours later, your $25 original purchase could grow 10x legitmately, with you only 5x as drunk.

Never a good idea...

Glad to hear your parents taught you some common sense.

That said you should have a credit card for emergency purposes. Using it occasionly and paying it off when it's due helps to establish a credit rating for yourself.

And if you think you might not have the will power to not use it, put the card in your freezer inside a block of ice. That way if you ever need it you can get at it; but it's a real pain.

But I agree, get a card; use it once for like a $50 item, then make the minimum payments on the card. It will do wonders for your credit rating. And then in a few years when you decide to make a big purchase like a house or a car; you do it because you have established your credit.

Sound advice:

http://snltranscripts.jt.org/05/05lbuy.phtml

CP: Did you know that millions of Americans live with debt they cannot control? That's why I developed this unique new program for managing your debt. It's called [presents book] "Don't Buy Stuff You Cannot Afford."

Wife: Let me see that... [grabs book, reads] "If you don't have any money, you should not buy anything." Hmm, sounds interesting

Husband: Sounds confusing.

Wife: I don't know honey, this makes a lot of sense. There's a whole section here on how to buy expensive things using money you save.

Husband: Give me that... [grabs book, looks at it] And where would you get this saved money?

CP: I tell you where and how in Chapter 3.

Wife: Ok, so what if I want something but I dont' have any money

CP: You don't buy it.

Husband: Well let's say I don't have enough money to buy something. Should I buy it anyways?

CP: No-o-o-o.

Husband: Now I'm really confused!

CP: It's a little confusing at first.

Wife: Well what if you have the money, can you buy something?

CP: Yes.

Wife: Now take the money away. Same story?

CP: Nope. You shouldn't buy stuff when you don't have the money.

Wow. I can vaguely remember various hazy images of just such occurances. Scary. Its all coming back now. Maybe thats why I got fired from that job. Important note, there are people whose job it is to actually look at the statements for the company credit card.....
