Have they? They had a pretty good run in 2015 and 2016, but since then they haven’t actually produced a lot of talent relative to other teams.

The Flames practice at 9:30 MT this morning. It will be interesting to see who's in the starter's net.

Also, the Wranglers played in Tucson last night and don't play again until Sunday. I wonder if Wolf and/or any other players might be travelling to Florida today to be available just in case?

I hereby request a poll on whether the Flames should trade Markstrom before the deadline, this summer, or not at all.

Interesting stat, but there is probably a bubble of players like him (similar production) within a particular salary range.

My guess is that if you charted out all of those types of players, that he would actually be fairly highly paid for what he produces, there’s no point in comparing him to McDavid and Austin Matthews, which you are kind of inadvertently doing stack ranking him like that.

Yep if there's a Markstrom deal to be had we really need to take it. This season has been a lot more fun to watch than I was expecting, team has competed hard, kids getting chances, etc. But without Tanev, Hanifin, and Markstrom, this team should be looking at a top 10 pick plus whatever assets Conroy squeezes from a Markstrom deal.

Mangiapane I also hope we see traded, we have a logjam of young wingers that could play on that line with Backlund and Coleman and it frees up more cap as well as the roster spot.

Also, Conroy seems to have stocked the D cupboards with all these moves this season. Let's see a trade for a Young Center or Prospect next!

I think that’s been disproven many times on this forum. It harkens back to an old narrative about how bad the flames are at drafting, and developing players, which is kind of stale news at this point.

The Flames trade bait.

1. Markstrom/Vladar
2. Mangiapane
3. Kuzemanko
4. Accepting a cap dump for picks.

I think the real question is right now or offseason if you were to trade him, what would be acceptable as a return? I see a lot of people justifying this post trade but if you were to say before hand this would have been the return it would have been underwhelming. It’s simply not an even deal for what traditionally dmen go for. With Markstrom there’s no advantage to keeping him long term. His cost is effective but an acceptable return for a game changer should be a 1st, 2nd and B prospect. If you were to get a blue chip prospect then maybe a conditional second depending on playoff success, to me would be fair. Short of that it’s a ripoff for a controllable game changer.

They have graduated every 1st rounder since then outside of Honzek. That is better than most teams. Will have to see how good Pelletier and Coronato are but they are going to have some kind of NHL career.

If they hit on some of their later round picks or if Wolf becomes a starter they will solidly remain in the top 5 of drafting teams.

Yeah unfortunately the last few drafts have not been particularly inspiring. The complete waste that was the '22 draft was particularly bad. How do you pick Ronni with your first pick (in the second round too) when you only have 3 total? Makes no sense. His ceiling was always a player archetype that you can find on waivers or free agency for cheap.

In 2015 and 16 they took swings on high upside players and several of them turned out. Get back to looking for homeruns and stop looking to fill perceived gaps in "player types" in the system or settling for low floor players who just "have a good chance to play."

The Flames drafting as been a result of trading away so many first and Second picks over the last 8 years.

6. Rooney (UFA)

Mangiapane could be a nice get for a team that misses out on Guentzal. He’s an analytics darling and I’m sure teams would love that he would be around for two playoff runs- especially if retained.

His spot in the line up is kind of the perfect spot to let Pelletier or another young winger develop too.

Huberdeau - Sharangovich - Kuzmenko
Zary - Kadri - Pospisil
Pelletier - Backlund - Coleman
Greer - Rooney - Duher

Then you still need to find a spot for Coronato (and maybe Holtz?)

This team really needs superstar or franchise player badly.
At the moment we have only Wolf who may become one.
So next year we need to pick top 3. Keeping Markstrom doesn't help us for that. Next year Vladar/Wolf should share the net.

I think Flames need to trade Markstrom, and just chase a better draft pick at this point and hope scouts light it up. But with Markstrom gone, it wouldn't surprise me if next year the Flames are trading Backlund, Coleman, Kuzmenko, Mang and maybe a Kadri.

Trading Markstrom, IMO, guarantees us top 10 picks in both '24 & '25. It needs to be done now - otherwise he's going to play the Flames into a 13-15th overall pick in this years draft.

We need 1 of Lindstrom or Catton and both will be gone by #10.

Nope. They only had the choice to take it if it was in the 20-32 range.

Steinberg stated last night on Flames Talk that Conroy won't be doing any interviews until after the deadline, which indicates he's hunkered down and still working on other deals. Obvious speculation here but I bet he's pushing hard to get a Markstrom deal done by the deadline, and hopefully he moves at least one winger out - most likely Mangiapane.

I think that's why it made sense not to wait on trading Hanifin until the last second on Friday. This now gives Conroy time to look at the last remaining trade chips for this season and make sure we get as much business done as possible. Come on Fitz, pull the trigger already.
