But the market will be bigger. And his MTNC is pretty average. Colorado will be all over that.

Sure, but do you think they beat a Holtz and 24 1st offer?

I think we can safely assume that the Flames understand the math in the West standings. So if Markstrom is a Flame on Friday at 1pm they must feel they can do better than the current Jersey offer in the summer.

That's a reasonable take.

I for one think the ship has sailed on a Markstrom trade this deadline. Things haven't gone well the first go around.

I hope it happens but I don't see it happening .

Not trading Markstrom could be the difference between picking 10th and 14th.

I would hate to just miss out on Iginla or Yakemchuk

Yeah I would be very surprised if he moves 11th hour as well. Trades for players with term aren't usually last minute deadline deals. Unfortunate for all that NJ deal didn't work out and the Devils GM didn't step up to support his team and coach.

Appreciate how risk averse these Gms are becoming are but acquiring a front line starting goalie for 2.5 seasons for a young core that good would have been an investment in creating a successful culture. I just always think of the oilers and how they have wasted years and years of top talent vs. teams like the pens who went for it every year and got some cups. Flames draft picks are also dropping slots with very little chance of making the playoffs which has a significant tangible loss of value for the team so it's a mutual loss i think.

An awful lot of GMs like Tom F. and Holland these days who just seem paralyzed by fear to even make a bet.

Yeah, fun game of chicken. More markets and alternatives which could cut either way in the summer. I’ll only be annoyed if they keep Markstrom into next season. That’s a lose/lose proposition for me.

Why would Jersey be willing to pay more for less? If they have Markstrom now, they'll be getting more peak Markstrom.

Perhaps the Flames think that Colorado, LA, Philly, etc. will be more interested in the summer. But if that were the case, you'd think they'd be showing more interest now as well.

Yeah, and also why I don’t want him on the team next season. Could be the difference between a top ten pick and a bottom 10 pick.

Don't forget, they haven't traded Hanifin yet. Without him, that defence looks absolutely ghastly.

Five teams are behind the Flames by three points or less: Seattle, New Jersey, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo. A few more games like last night's, and the Flames could be looking up at all five of them. That would have them drafting 8th – with Markstrom.

And at Markstrom's age, he could drop off a cliff at any time. It could start next season.

An overlooked factor. Giving it the good old college try to make the playoffs, is fine, but it should way down on the list of priorities for the Flames right now. The better draft position is way more important.

I think Vladar is pretty good TBH and the rumored Markstom returns add to the Flames upfront
not sure I see a massive drop either way
