Edwards is known to meddle as far as team direction is concerned (i.e. try for POs versus tank or sell off). I’ve never heard of him derailing a deal. I’ve personally overheard him tell a GM that as long as he was within budget (this was pre-cap) he could sign whatever deal he wanted. In Gaudreau’s case he was trying to salvage one that was falling apart.
So theories of him derailing a deal over retention seem farfetched to me. I think Markstrom’s issues were over communication, nothing more.

Pre-cap was nearly 20 years ago. WTF. Tired of people defending Edwards.

Sadly a PPG in the NCAA really isn’t that strong, like I said even at a PPG he’s not in the top 60 for scoring. I don’t believe anyone called him a “nothing” prospect but for instance he wouldn’t even break into Calgarys top 5-7 right now.
That type of prospect for an extended Hanifin is very underwhelming, that’s the issue.

Do these precious models account for what kind of team the player is on, or the division they play in? If they're in an intensive program/school, or how they've been utilized?
People are writing off Honzek because his PPG is dipping except despite injury time he's the top scorer on the Giants and the only PPG player. Seems like a situation that isn't catering to eye-popping stats, even if he is a good player with potential.
Given Howard's performance at the best on best U-20 tourney with his peers, maybe he's just in a situation in the NCAA where the points aren't going to come at an elite-looking rate. But PPG is always a good benchmark for a guy that can *potentially* play for me. Then you look at tournaments with top talent to confirm whether they can compete there, and he checked that box.
I'm sure the models have been wrong and will be wrong again. I wouldn't surrender all of my analysis to someone's predictive tool that uses the same metrics on all players across all situations, when there are so many variables including confounding ones that may play into a player's circumstance and output.
But, I digress.

Howard would be interesting if and only if the “get a 2nd rounder if your first rounder doesn’t sign” clause would transfer with him.

Fair - I changed it. Still - talk with anyone who has worked for CNRL or Ensign and tell me Edwards doesn't meddle.
Owners have a right to meddle - it's their team. What bothers me is when people wave their hands that ownership could possibly have any involvement over team decisions - especially when it comes to player management - their most significant cost.

You can’t have conditions tied to players signing or not any longer

It wouldn’t be a condition on the trade, it’s just the standard compensation if your first round pick doesn’t sign. It last happened with that swedish d-man Minny went off the board with (Filip Johansson i think) in 2018 ish. A team is awarded a pick at the same spot in the 2nd round if the player doesn’t sign.

He has personal experience with the man. That's relevant isn't it?
I have heard stories too (I'm in oil and gas) and I imagine many of them are true.
But there is also a hyper over reaction to the topic that has people ignoring the Flames spending to the cap, buying players out, retaining on Tanev, etc.
Do you have a story where he meddled with a Flames trade? If so bring it up.
Personally I'm not defending Edwards. It's just been a long week of insiders guessing at what's going on and then proven wrong pretty quickly. Yet people just lap it up.

Most people at CNRL have never even interacted with Edward’s.

Been a fan of this team for 30 years. A lot of pain and dark times. Almost seems like talking poorly against ownership and management is taboo in this thread. There has been lots and lots of smoke over the years that implies that ownership is very actively involved in certain levels of hockey ops. I don’t think it’s wrong in a speculation thread for fans to be actively speculating their involvement.

From Tampa, instead of Howard, my main prospect would be Jack Thompson. Right D, offensive/2 way, Canadian. Was good in the WJHC, and for analytics guys his NHLe curves up over his AHL seasons.
As a secondary prospect, Niko Huuhtanen. Power forward RWer playing, and almost a PPG in Liiga. Also a good NHLe. His contract with Jokerit is up this year and could come over for next season. He was given the Wolf treatment in his draft year and was the last guy picked. He’s likely a boom/bust type of prospect but that physical play, size, and scoring ability he’s shown so far would be intriguing.
