Yeah, I'm not seeing the 2025 replacing the 2024 pick as a negative either...in fact, I'd prefer it. There is a bit of opportunity cost waiting a year, but we already have two 1sts this year, and I'd rather have more bullets in the chamber in a draft year where there seem to be better forwards available.

Not sure why Colorado and Carolina aren't in on Markstrom? Both are actually in playoff spots. And Markstrom would be a big upgrade in net for both.

Not sure what the real offers are but in a scenario the Flames are turning down a 1st and Holtz so they can get Mercer and not require an additional 1st, that would be a big fail IMO.

What if its Mercer and a 2nd vs Holtz and a 1st? If Conroy and the scouts have keyed in on Mercer as the guy they want then the first option seems quite good imo. If its Mercer on his own vs Holtz + 1st then yes I agree with you

I'd be very satisfied with Holtz, Vanacek, and a 1st. Would prefer a 2024, but would accept the 2025 with addition of a late pick (1st & 5th). Natually no retention.

I would be happy with Conroy moving on his necessity for Mercer if Fitz moves on his refusal to move the 2024 pick or vice versa. If I'm Conroy I'm pushing for Mercer + 2024 but that seems like it won't happen. Seems like both sides can budge a little to push this through.

Mercer is unquestionably better than Holtz plus is a center and a mid 1st could be a player as much as it could turn into a player that doesn’t amount to much of anything (see Valimaki for the flames). I’d be totally fine if it was Mercer for Markstrom 1 for 1 with no retention. God knows this league has seen worse 1 for 1s lol.

Well I think he would waive for Colorado, they just don't have the space long term for his contract.
Carolina I've been told is not a destination of interest.

They are likely not getting Mercer in any event.
Or if Mercer becomes available, I expect it will be in a deal in the summer for an extended Saros.

My preference would be to get a 2024 1st round pick that is top 10 protected. It could still be a really good pick this year if the devils finished where are in the standings today (set to pick 12th overall). That’s within range of picking Iginla and could be packaged along with other assets to move up into the top 10 if Conroy really wanted to get a certain player. I really think this season is a one off for New Jersey and I could definitely see them finishing in the top 5 of the NHL next season with a healthy roster and Markstrom in net.
Either way, it seems to me the best method to make the trade work would be to make it a 2024 pick that is top 10 protected. If the pick is in the top 10, the flames would get their 2025 pick with limited (maybe lottery protection) or no protection.

You can laugh at this but humans are humans and have preferences. If Markstrom chooses to exercise his NMC to avoid going to Carolina or Colorado it’s his prerogative.

Wow, Seravalli on Barnburner today says Fitz and Connie had a deal but 'upper management' killed it over salary retention. He specifically mentions Maloney.

Isn't that whole point of the NMC. To protect yourself from going to Edmonton and get a chance to get to a contender.
