What are the conditions on the Montreal 1st this year again? I’d much rather give up this years first vs next and I wonder how that factors into the “going for it” this year again. If you send over this years, who cares if you make the playoffs?

Based on everything that has been reported, it seems like there were three time periods in the Markstrom negotiations...
1. All-Star break and eastern road trip: After the Lindholm trade, New Jersey reaches out and makes a serious offer on Markstrom. Conroy is intrigued enough to approach Markstrom about his willingness to waive for the Devils. Markstrom agrees and serious negotiations begin, with many believing it will get done before the team leaves the NYC area.
2. Return to Calgary/San Jose game: Things don't get done before the end of the road trip, but negotiations continue as the team returns home. On February 15, the Flames play the Sharks. Wolf is a surprise starter and Markstrom spends a lot of time after the warm-up interacting with the fans, which is uncharacteristic even when he isn't scheduled to start. Wolf gets lit up but a goalie change isn't made during the game. Online, everyone with any kind of connection to the Flames and Devils seems to think the deal is nearly done and is just a matter of time. The general consensus seems to be that this deal fell apart when the Devils asked the Flames to retain salary and they couldn't agree on the compensation for retention.
3. Cooling off period/win streak: After the deal fell apart, Markstrom had an awful game against Detroit, but then the team turned things around and have gone on a win streak against some tough opponents. Meanwhile, New Jersey has been spinning their wheels and have fallen back. Rumoured that the Devils reached out again offering to make the deal without retention and the Flames may have rebuffed them due to each team's current fortunes.
If that is the rough timeline, I think it's possible that the deal fell apart at stages 1 & 2 because of retention and at stage 3 because of how the team is playing.
Right now, Conroy's primary focus should be on getting a Hanifin deal done.

The Markstrom deal is not dead, however the NJD are no longer willing to part with their 2024 1st Round Pick. They attempted to change it from a 24 to a 25 Pick and this has remained a sticking point for Craig Conroy. Devils also wanted one of Calgary's prospects or young players and it was a non starter for Conroy - One source believes it was Pospisil but it is unconfirmed. Additionally, Flames are locked on Dawson Mercer and SHOULD the devils put him on the table, I don't believe the 1st round pick would be required. Everything is in the hands of Fitzbitzyspider. If the deal isn't done by Wednesday, its over till the offseason on Devils/Markstrom.
The Noah Hanifin offers are strong, Flames were prefer a sign and trade to be both respectful to Noah and to maximize the trade return. They have currently two offers for him as a rental (Neither contain premium assets). There is indeed smoke around Tampa Bay but as I have eluded to previously, this is because nobody in the East wants to see Tampa get any stronger despite their injuries. They have world class players that know how to win and THE BEST goalie in the world currently. I still remain adamant that I believe the ideal trade partner is Florida Panthers.
Andrew Mangiapane continues to get some interest from contending teams but the offers are not very good considering he has additional term on his deal but I do anticipate that flames will move him prior to becoming a UFA. He holds a valuable spot on the roster on the Backlund, Coleman line and Flames would love to insert Coronato/Pelt on this line. Teams that miss out on Jake Guentzel are anticipated to circle back on this player.
I have herd its a lockdown on anything related to Rasmus Andersson, Michael Backlund, Blake Coleman. One source said you'd have to check all boxes with premium assets to get Calgary to move Rasmus.
Flames have sniffed around the asking price for Trevor Zegras however I'm led to believe Calgary will not be doing any kind of buying unless its to plug holes in the line up.

Feels a bit weird from New Jersey to not just try to provide top 12 protection on the 2024 pick. Really I feel like they should just move Mercer for him and be done with it.
To me the Tampa noise has always been to get Florida or Boston to step up, neither of those teams would want to lose him long term to a division rival.
If they could not use a retention spot on Hanifin or Markstrom, to be able to retain a little bit on Mangiapane, then I think that could really open up the market for him.
I have a weird feeling Buffalo will make an offer with a premium asset for Andersson at the draft, but will be interesting to see if the Flames bite.

Wouldn't a 2025 first rounder be better than 2024 anyway? By all accounts the draft will be better, and why not have the second 1st rounder knowing they might lose their own first in the draft (to the Habs).

Lundell is and has always been the asking player for the Flames. This goes back to the summer when the Panthers came shopping for Noah. At that time he was a piece they wouldn't be willing to move.
Internally, the Flames believe Kylington will fill the void of Hanifin. Minute Muncher, Skates like the wind and has offensive upside. Still room to grow at 26.
