No chance Markstroms comment did anything to the players in the locker room to get them undivided .

That isn't what he said. He was told that by someone. He is told a lot of things by people, that does not make them true.

Friedman does not "state" that, he states he heard that...

Quoting Pete Moss from the trade rumour thread:

by the way, I'll also say this, I know a lot of people, including myself believe the deal fell apart over retention or what Calgary considered the proper price over retention. On Saturday, someone else said to me that they heard that it wasn't even that, so much as Calgary just saw how Markstrom was going and how the team was starting to go and they just said look we can make the playoffs and we're not doing this. So there's a second reason that this may have fallen apart.

So, someone told something to someone, who then told something to Friedman. Not exactly "facts" in my mind.

If the Flames really thought they were in it, the Kings and Predators on streaks likely put an end to that thinking.

I still think this gets done but with the Devil's first in 2025 top x protected.

Using this year's pick is too sketchy for the Devils in their current standings position.

I think Conroy has proven that it's not about winning or making the playoffs. If that's the case you keep Tanev. A 2nd and a prospect wouldnt be enough to change that.

Safe to dismiss that Friedman bit for now. I could see that being another element of the pressure sale tactic here, i.e.:

"Well we were going to trade him, but he's playing so well that even our lowly team is on a heater and might make the playoffs... I guess you wouldn't know anything about that eh Fitzy! I don't know anymore. Really have to make it worth my while."

Add this to the time pressure they were trying to create, and if they really are holding firm on Mercer... Could just be a tactic.

However, the news that NJ will pursue into the summer does take down the heat a bit.

I hope another team steps up out of nowhere and makes a splash for Markstrom.

According to Friedman NJ is resisting putting Mercer in trade talks

https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...deadline-week/

Quote:
According to several sources, the Devils have not surrendered on Jacob Markstrom. If he is not traded to them this week, they will try again this summer. They’ve decided he is their target in goal. I’m also not convinced Tyler Toffoli is going anywhere. The price is high, and negotiations continue. It’s poker, so we will see where we are in a few days, but the Devils like him, and I don’t think they wish to easily give up their playoff pursuit, no matter how tough their trip through southern California was. In addition to a goaltender with term, they have to be considering a defender too, but those are very hard to find. They’ve dangled Alexander Holtz, but resisted Dawson Mercer.

Yep you are right as its got me fuming. If true then the Flames are being unbelievably stupid. They had a great chance to move him for a really good return and yet they have kept him to remain in the mushy middle. I despair of this team.

Elliotte is wrong. flat out wrong.

The Flames had just lost 3 games in a row. There is no chance they had a deal near the finish line and then Conroy said "hold up, we just lost 3 in a row, we are playing too well to do this"

the timeline doesn't add up. Elliotte was fed incorrect information

Why fume if you’re still stating ‘if true’? It’s not worth getting bent out of shape over something none of us have a true pulse on. Last I looked there’s still quite a few days until TDL, let Conroy cook a bit longer here, he’s proven that he’s been willing to deal.

I guess Mercer is the hill that Conroy is willing to die on.

We don't know what the offer is but if its Holtz + 1st rounder and Conroy wants Mercer + 1st rounder, I wonder if Conroy would cave on Holtz + 1st rounder + 3rd (or 4th or 5th, whatever it takes) to get the deal done.

Hopefully we can get a deal done before Friday

Either would be the best package traded for a goaltender in a couple decades or more? Just. Make. The. Trade.

Would you rather have Holtz + 2024 1st or Mercer + 2025 1st (top 10 protected)?

Maybe Conroy is playing the long game here. Waits to make it harder for the Devils to make it, before finally accepting the Devils' best offer, only for them to not make the playoffs anyway. Their pick is not lottery protected (as Conroy made sure) and they win the lottery with their pick. Calgary picks in the top 10 twice this draft.

Corey Schneider got a top 10 pick unfettered. I think that's still better.

But IMO Holtz + 1st is still a no brainer for us. I don't think they've offered that yet, I am choosing to trust that if that was on the table we'd be talking about Holtz fitting in here already.

Markstrom is the best goalie the Flames have had since Kipper and there’s no reason to believe he doesn’t have a few great years left in him. Unless you are pretty confident you have an adequate replacement for him in the system than you’d have to be crazy to trade him unless it’s an absolute home run. And as good as Wolf is I just don’t think he’s the guy. I’m guessing Conroy knows this. Trading Markstrom even for a player like Mercer and a first could set the team back for who knows how long. I’ll be surprised if Markstrom is traded at all unless he asks for one.

No protections on 24? I'm taking it and holtz. There's still a chance NJ misses.

Assume there'd have to protections on the 24 first too, then it's Mercer. The 25 draft is also supposed to be deeper.

Both these deals are too much and if that is the ask that is why it's not done.

No Salary Retained I'm thinking it will be more like this.

Seigenthaler, Vanecek, 1st

for

Markstrom

Flames trade Vanecek 50% retained (another 50% retained by 3rd team) to Colorado for 2nd.

Flames get 1st, 2nd and Seigenthaler.

Retaining salary on Vancek is 1 year less than for Markstrom.
