If the series of events played out as reported (Devils and Flames have a trade agreed, Flames approach Markstrom, he waives, deal gets squashed over retention amount) then the shot was not at Conroy, he was aiming higher.

Sounds more like they couldn’t agree to the price on retention.
Flames probably had a high ask retaining 2 years.

If there was no agreement on retention, then there was no deal, and Marky should not have been approached.
It would be no different then saying they hadn’t agreed on the round of the pick.

New Jersey probably said they weren't going to get deep into talks or details unless they could get assurance ahead of time that Markstrom would waive. It's a huge waste of time for one thing, but also embarrassing for team to have a deal in place only to find out that the player won't waive to go there. Any GM worth their salt will sort that part before it gets to that point.

Yeah the report that the Flames wouldn't retain was squashed. It was over what the asset cost was for retaining. It's fairly established what retaining on an expiring deal costs (like with Tanev). But retaining for 2 additional years has got to be significant and I could see that being hard to nail down.
We've heard Conroy wanted Seamus Casey as the price for retaining as much as the Devils wanted. Seems like the Devils didn't want to do that, but of course the media leaps at the chance to blame Conroy and Murray Edwards.

Is a conversation about waiving sufficient? Isn’t that how Feaster got in trouble with Iggy?
So, isn’t more likely that Marky had to sign something?
And when you sign a contract amendment things get serious. Maybe he signed, then dressed at that game where he was tossing out pucks, almost like he was saying farewell.
And the the deal never happened. Hence his frustration.

I'm thinking it's Markstrom. Even if the Devils have lost this season I do think they want it sooner than later. Watching the twitters today and the Devils are not getting any help in the net.
