We're getting carried away here expecting Mercer for Markstrom.

No we're not. NJ needs goaltending more than Mercer to compete. Mercer or death!

Not necessarily. He would be upset for being asked to waive and then the trade not going through.
Like any other player he would probably rather not have the thought of if he's going to be traded or not hanging over his head. Especially when he's not even a pending free agent.

His comment yesterday was dumb but I’ll give him credit for playing lights out even after things broke down.
Now it’s just a huge mess. I think this trade happens by the deadline.

Anyone else think- who cares? Go be mad then? He will get over it. Or not, whatever. Not really a big deal. This is a NHL team…

For both teams it would be rather stupid to wait for the off-season rather than now.
NJ would get one less season/playoff with peak Markstrom.
Calgary would have to compete with many other goalie options. It’s a fairly weak FA market but others will be available through trade. The flames would no longer be selling peak Markstrom at that time. Markstrom being on the team also hurts the draft pick.

Then why did he respond in the affirmative if that would potentially be so upsetting? He could have said no and it would have cleared the clouds hanging over his head. As though no woman and baby have ever moved anywhere, let alone with a $36 million husband.
Wow, I might have to move to New Jersey for 26 months if I decide to agree to it, but it would be the end of the world if either team backs away. Markstrom can cry me a river.

Calgary should just say we aren’t trading him to you in the off-season. Now or never, if you don’t go for it now we’ll trade him elsewhere in the off-season.

Flames don't have that kind of control. All control is in Markstroms hands.
And by the sounds of it, Marky is ready to go to NJ now. Not in the offseason. Just make the deal. Build a little good faith between all parties.

Exactly, there's no point dragging it out. Its not like they'll offer more in the offseason.

The right package is more important than good faith.

He could have just said no but New Jersey was a team he was willing to go to if they did decide to trade him. A player with a NMC can prefer to not be traded but still be willing to go if it's the right team.
Him and Conroy probably had an understanding where he wouldn't be approached until a trade was agreed to and he just had to sign off on it.
I know you don't like the guy but it shouldn't be hard to understand why he would be annoyed. I would be annoyed if I agreed to waive my NMC and thought I was going somewhere and then it not happen. Especially if I was trying to help my current team get into the playoffs.

Then Markys not moving and a golden opportunity to sell high flitters away.
It's not rocket appliances.
Markstrom controls his destiny. All decisions flow through his hands, return or not.
Besides, the sticking point has been removed. The return was already agreed upon and I'm sure that offer is still tabled.

Sorry, what?
Of course the Flames have control. It’s not Marky negotiating and deciding the trade or when. Lol Marky has some control, he can just say he won’t waive. The Flames have some control, they can just… not trade him.
The word from Elliott tonight is NJ just wants to wait til summer (because it’ll be cheaper). Ergo, Flames should just straight up tell em that isn’t happening. If you don’t trade for him now, we won’t trade him to you in summer. Simple.

Well if he isn’t traded at deadline , I think he is 100% gone in off season. Something tells me Markstrom isn’t going to want to go through trade speculation again next year.

I don't know that GMs waste their time grinding out a deal for a guy with an NMC and then just spring it on them. It's a delicate process, and you have to know that the current situation is a risk of starting down that path. Markstrom holds the hammer so you have to give him time to process the idea.

Marky can also block NJ still after being jerked around.
Pretty sure he waives if they work something out with LA in the summer. It's not as "now or never" as some are proclaiming.
Some of you would be terrible negotiators with that scarcity mentality.
NJ came to you. Hold your ground!

Dude, that's literally what a full blown NTC means, total control. Flames can pepper him with 32 trade offers, he can so no 32 times a day and ain't no thing anyone can do about it.
But whatever.

I have grown to increasingly dislike his contract as I've delved more into goaltending stats and contracts. I didn't really have anything against the guy himself until he started making commentary about what's going on "up top" when from all accounts Conroy treats people with nothing but respect.
How different is it than having a conversation with your spouse about applying for a job out of state/province that you think would afford you the ability to be more successful? You both agree that you'd be willing to move.
Then, you don't get the job. Are you going to complain and get upset about how it was mishandled? And your flaky confidence is gone? Just go back to work and keep it moving.
