They can also trade Mercer for other players/assets if he's log jammed behind 2 other centres.
His value is still his value & it's much higher than a 34 year old Markstrom.
We're getting carried away here expecting Mercer for Markstrom.

Honestly, watch the deal end up being Casey and 2nd for Markstrom, no retention.

Guess you missed the part where the only way they’d deal Marky is if they got a deal that blew their doors off.

That’s before yesterday where he shoots darts at Conny.
And are we supposed to go out and say we will accept a mediocre deal? Time is right for a deal, get a good return and move forward.

Friedman says Devil have identified Markstrom as their top choice and he has heard that if it doesn't happen before the trade deadline, they are willing to wait until offseason
He also said he believes Markstrom is upset because the Flames told him about a possible deal with NJ and he indicated he would be willing to go and then they told him the deal was off.

So it sounds from this that the shot was definitely at Conny and not at Edwards (ie gumming things up)?

The only reason he'd be upset about that is because he wasn't simply willing to go, he wanted to go.

I was gonna say. That makes it sound like Markstrom wanted to go.
It sounds like this is definitely going to happen at some point.

There's nothing wrong with Markstrom wanting to go. He probably had to think deeply about it and mentally prepare himself to give the okay. It's like a girlfriend saying she's fine to let you go then saying she wants you back. How can you not have mixed feelings if there's one foot out the door?

Well sure, he waived to go and the deal fell apart.
Piecing together the talk from around the league since, it sounds like it wasn't about if the Flames would retain, but over what the Flames and Devils believed the compensation for retaining for 2 extra years should have been.
With the report out that the Devils would still be interested now without retention, we'll see if they can come back together to hammer something out.

Whether he wants to go or not, good for Conroy making sure it’s the deal he finds acceptable.

I refuse to believe Connie would go to Markstrom unless he and the Flames thought the deal was as good as done. Including him checking around the league first. So, stinks to me of the Devils adding some sort of wrench last minute.

Nothing wrong at all. Bye Markstrom. At least we can salvage $13 of our $36 million out of that sunk cost.
Using the word "willing" is so disingenuous. If someone asks me if I'm 'willing' to not stay at home tonight and instead go to Target with them, sure.
If they text back and say they actually don't need to go, great. I'm completely fine with it, not "upset". I didn't want to go there, but I was willing.

I think Friedman was saying Markstrom was more pissed off at the emotional rollercoaster of being asked if he would approve a trade to NJ and then being told he was staying.

Yup, for sure. I’d want to go to the Devils if I was Markstrom.
I’m trying to think back over everything I’ve read. Do you remember a specific source saying it was about the price of retention? I guess that’s probably a fair inference since it’s clear that the issue related to retention per Friedman, and the Flames have shown a willingness to retain the maximum amount to get deals done, as in the Tanev trade. So, I think you’re probably right there too.
I think they will be able to, because I think Fitzgerald is going to meet Conroy’s price because of all the pressure on him.

So, likely Markstrom won't move until the off-season?

Makes sense. He’s married, and he’s got young children.

He said they said they wanted to keep him because he was playing well.
This needs to end in a divorce quickly it’s just not good for the team.

Which makes sense since we've been hearing all season that he didn't want this to be a distraction and they'd only come to him if they had an offer they couldn't refuse.
Then, it became a distraction anyway.
