I honestly think it'd be a good fit. I feel he has a chance to rebound, playing more in a 1A/B role.

Mercer + conditional 1st - NJ makes the playoffs or its a 2nd + Vanecek for Markstrom not retained

Then trade Vladar as well this TDL and run Vanecek/Wolf going forward 1A/B.

No way Conroy makes a trade without an NHL player coming back....and it wont be just a G.

Mercer is an NHL player though

at this point, I fear the Mercer train has left the station though. If it's Holtz, then Conroy better try and get a center in a deal for Hanifin ... just can't stockpile wingers and have no centers.

Sorry, did you mean someone in addition to Mercer for the presumed Vanecek cap dump?

Also, I think Holtz would be a fine get too, but I really really want Mercer.

Fusion is saying Mercer is coming no matter what. Conditional 2nd that turns into a 1st if NJ make playoffs. +Vanacek.

I don't hate that. Would be nice if they throw in one more piece but maybe that's only if we end up retaining

I think that much like the Dallas trade, the player being mentioned is only here on CP. That being mercer.

The Original trade leak was for Holtz, so I'd guess that's the player coming back, and if Conroy is savvy, maybe siegenthaler, too.

Ahhh...misunderstood.

Yeah im pretty sure that Mercer is a deal breaker on the NJ side of things.

Holtz has already been offered and agreed to ( if the info is correct) but things might have changed since then.

Both the pressure on Fitzgerald and Conroy has possibly had both guys start to pivot.

Either way, this is a mess all of a sudden.

I doubt that Markstrom’s unhappiness stems from leaks to the media. It sure seems like he believed he was being traded and I would expect that was based on conversations he or his agent had with the Flames. And then it didn’t happen.

I would love it to be proven wrong...I just can't see new jersey giving up this much for a soon to be 35 old goaltender

Ya good point. Everything seems to point that the deal that was agreed to on principle was Holtz. Rumours about NJ re-signing Toffoli with Holtz being the odd man out point to this as well. Holtz and a 1st for Markstom, draw up the papers.

He also could just not make the deal for Holtz. No rush from the Flames perspective.

I don’t know if I agree. If they are bringing in Markstrom with no retention, it is difficult for them to sign Mercer (being an RFA) and have Toffoli back coupled with lots of holes on defense.

I am one who thinks that the change in demand for the Flames to retain on Markstrom indicates the willingness of NJ to make it Mercer instead of Holtz.

There is some…peculiarity to the whole situation.

I would not be surprised if the hiccup around waiving the NTC and a dispute on value of retention was a Murray Edwards issue. Him throwing a curveball at the 11th hour is certainly something we’ve heard in the past.

The whole situation is a bit bizarre. Ownership meddling would certainly help explain.

I think the strongest position we had was if/when we would retain on Markstom. We are going to get less for Markstrom at 100 percent, I think Mercer is a pipe dream at this point (for me at least). But Holtz is no slouch and still a good get.

Would people hypothetically prefer Holtz + 1st or Mercer straight up?

Yes there is, any goalie with two of our better defencemen gone is going to get shelled for the remainder of the season. Markstrom is clearly not happy and there may well be more goalies available in the summer, you just do not know.

Markstrom is at his highest trade value right now, so trade him ASP, tonight if possible to allow the Devils to start the visa process. Kipper will not mind.

Sure as long as the return is a center. The Flames are alright on the wing, with the following wingers being 25 or younger - Yegor, Zary, Coronato, Pospisil, Honzek, Pelletier.

They have the following centers 25 or younger -

Seems like they need a center. Jersey conveniently has a center and is the team with the greater need right now.

Nothing will happen before the trade deadline and the situation will continue to fester over the spring and come June will be in the media again.
The Flames will find a taker for Vladar and will move forward with Markstom and Wolf next year in another attempt to be competitive.
