Markstrom issue ain’t going away and will be a distraction, regardless if he’s traded or not. To a degree, get this done before hand so all the attention is on Mikka tonight. That is, if a deal is close.

No, I would say it is about equal for both teams. Let's be frank here. The teams are headed in very different directions. New Jersey is headed up and is a puck stopper away from having a very good team. Calgary is headed in the opposite direction and Markstrom is not a part of that future. Calgary should be looking to the future and doing everything they can to secure pieces that will be part of that future team. A Mercer or a Holtz is definitely a piece for the future.

Calgary can still make runs for playoffs with Markstrom backstopping them, and he can mentor the wolf. They can look to move Hanifin for the young center.
Calgary is NOT making a run for the playoffs. The loss of Tanev and Hanifin all but gut that idea. The Flames will be playing out the string and looking toward next year. I would also argue that Markstrom would be a horrible mentor for Wolf. Markstrom is a goaltender whose style is completely different than Wolf's. Markstrom is a big puck stopper who relies on angles. Wolf is an instinctive athletic goaltender who actually makes saves. Different styles, different mentalities, and very different approaches to the game.

Quote:
NJ would be stuck looking at worse B tier options and continue losing due to goaltending woes in the meantime, and this season would be toast (if it wasn't already).
And Calgary will still be looking for a top six forward to improve the lineup. Conroy's job is to improve the team and here is an opportunity to do just that. He needs to take that step back and realize the position he's created and try to make the best out of it. If a player like Mercer or Holtz is still on the table for the taking you make the trade.

Quote:
This is why Conroy doesn't need to budge.
Conroy has overplayed his hand IMO. He's pressed too hard, made a mistake with the NTC, and destroyed the relationship with the player. The only move forward now is to move the player and move him quickly.

Make. The. Trade.

^^ There’s a year to make a deal for Markstrom. It doesn’t change Calgary’s fortunes much either way. NJ has the PO window closing.

Does Kiprusoff's event tonight really have any impact on when a potential trade would be completed? I can't really see the organization tip-toeing a potential trade around this. It's unfortunate timing but it's not as though all the focus and rightful attention won't be on Kiprusoff at 1800 this evening no matter what else is going down before and after. It's not as though there isn't already a lot of smoke in the air regardless.

Do you really think there'd be no discussion about a Markstrom trade if it went down today? Like the media would just ignore it? You'd have significant competing narratives. It would be a PR nightmare.

If the internet rumours are true and it was Markstrom for Holtz, Vanacek and a 1st. What is the gap for Calgary to get Holtz to Mercer? (3 drafts ago Mercer went 18th and Holtz went 7th).

Sure, there are plenty of haters that think I am negative and hate the Flames, even Oilers fans. Whatever, it really doesn’t bother me.
I know who I am. There are many ways of being a fan.

You already do have competing headlines. Can’t put your head in the sand and pretend the Markstrom issue doesn’t exist. Do the retirement thing after the deadline the if you want complete attention on mikka.

Instead there will be a lot of oooh and aaah about who is starting in goal tonight and what that means. If he starts are talks dead? If he sits is a trade imminent? Narrative is already lost.

Only Mercer?! Mercer would be a massive get on his own.

Just Markstrom and Huberdeau and Weegar and Coleman and Hanifin and Mangi and probably Backlund.

It might have been possible to hold the line on Kadri because I'm skeptical what his other options really were but who knows.

Had this trade gone down 3 weeks ago, the Devils have at least 4 more points than they have now, probably more. Fitz is tanking their season, and the players can't be happy. The fact that two players have now publicly thrown their goalies under the bus after losses, tells you all you need to know about the players' mindsets at this point.

This trade helps both teams. And every day that passes is negative for both teams (more so for the Devils). It isn't too late to do it, but every day increases the damage. I think both teams (but especially the Devils) will look back and think that the differences that they have been negotiating over, weren't worth the fight.

Get it done.

This far out from the draft, I would say draft position no longer really comes into play when evaluating a player's value.
Holtz hasn't really broken through yet (although he may not have had a really good opportunity under Ruff), whereas Mercer can play center and already has a 27 goal season under his belt.

It seems like the difference in value is starting to diverge significantly. I'm not going to try to guess what kind of asset we would send with Markstrom to bridge the gap though.

Whenever one of our players feelings get hurt we send them to New Jersey.

Get it done.

Holtz+Bahl for Markstrom full cap I would gladly accept. Young NHL players and clearing big cap space would be a win.

if there's no retention, you 100% have to take back Vanecek, no? I don't see how a trade works for Jersey without clearing his contract.

Can't help but wonder why the heck they scheduled Kipper's banner raising right before the trade deadline if they didn't want the distraction of trades to compete with the event.

The original deal did not include Vanacek but as you state, that was with potential retention.

I still do not think they trade Markstrom unless he is now pushing for it himself.

If he is then it will happen, but its unlikely Mercer is included.

It will be Holtz/pick/something else.
