Dune: Part Two is truly a cinematic marvel, this generation’s Lord of the Rings, their Star Wars, and ought to be savoured on the biggest screen with the best sound possible. NO SPOILERS HERE:
So many reviews I’d glanced at this morning listed this as the greatest film ever made or the best sci-fi film ever - and they’re pretty spot on.
An hour after seeing it I’m still trying to form my thoughts on how or why the hell this film is so good. The first 30 minutes dragged a bit and the thought crossed my mind, ‘oh no, this isn’t going to be as good as part one’, but holy #### the story got going like that giant snowball scene in Willow and crashed into the closing credits.
We’ve truly hit the pinnacle of cinematic achievements here: the mindblowing cinematography, the VFX, set design, costumes, sound - all phenomenal. The dialogue was hard to understand at times, but that seems par for the course these days. The music was more subtle than the first film.
And speaking of the first film, I saw a clip with Villeneuve where he mentioned to the interviewer (I think Christopher Nolan was interviewing him, now that I think back) that he designed the film to be enjoyed even by people who didn’t see the first, and I really don’t think that worked out as he planned. However, I think it’s incredibly accessible to non-book readers, more so than the first book despite introducing a host of new characters.
This is the most epic movie I’ve ever seen.

As if I wasn’t already insanely pumped to see it tomorrow. Haven’t been to a theatre in months because of the lack of decent blockbusters. Can’t wait.

Interstellar?! It's a turd! Let me save you 2hrs and 49 minutes: Love Transcends Time and Space.
There, that's it. That's the whole movie. The rest is just dead ochra and filing cabinet robot filler.

Well, I'll need to see it to believe that level of hype.
Considering the first one was a good, solid chess board setter (but not, like, GREAT), it will still have to make quite a jump to get into best sci-fi movie territory.

How long to theaters keep movies in the good theaters these days? My parents want to see Dune 2 with us but won't be available until next weekend, it should still be in the AVX ones next weekend right?
Also has anyone seen a movie at the Landmark laser projection ones? Wondering if it's worth making the trek to one of those?

Depends on the theatre and what’s opening but I’d be shocked if dune isn’t still in the better auditoriums next weekend.
IMO laser ultra at landmark is about the same as avx.

If Dune isn't still in theatres next weekend it would be a historical failure. It's just released today.

Looking at the upcoming release schedule, I think it's safe to say Dune 2 will have control of the best screens at least until Ghostbusters comes out on the 22nd.

Went to Dune 2 this afternoon, and it was great…. but we walked out confused by the “ending”, so mixed emotions. Fantastic and WTF.
For the whole “Zendaya = Kristen Stewart” crowd… give your head a shake. Thought she was excellent, along with everyone else.

I read that there’s going to be a third.
I haven’t seen Dune 2 yet, but does that help make the ending a bit more acceptable?

If it's a cliffhanger ending the ESB parallels would make more sense.

Agreed. Kristen Stewart is a good actress. Zendaya is not. We’ll see how she does in dine 2 though. Haven’t seen it yet.

Yeah, wife was googling it on the way home. We had no idea. Credits started rolling and the lights came on, and we just looked at each other not knowing what to think. Got the impression the rest of the crowd were thinking the same thing. Not the usual chatter, just kind of a quiet confusion.
Loved every second of it, but wasn’t prepared.

…said no one… ever! Emotional range of a teaspoon in anything I’ve had to sit through. Never mind the Twilight crap, WTF was with Snow White and the huntsman? Only thing she was a natural at was lying in a coma.

K-stew also has like three facial expressions that she uses across all of her films that I've seen.
I like the actress, just in specific, limited roles.

Dune 2 is incredible, visually stunning, masterful. The score is unreal, looking forward to watching some making of footage to see how those sounds were created, very dense and constant. I liked Elvis enough but had no idea Austin Butler could do what he did here. Chani didn't annoy me, her part was written very well, but would have been more effective with a more capable actress.
Already have a ticket to see it again on Sun.

Dine 1 was a thorough masterpiece though, we must admit that.
An entire ensemble film encapsulated within a diner with only a single camera? Magical stuff! Almost Unreal.

Dune took me 4 different tries of turning it on and losing interest and flicking it off til I really got into it. Glad I did. Really enjoyed it but for someone with no knowledge of the story I think you gotta be in the right mood/setting.
