I was thinking about it and if I were Jacob I'd be annoyed with the Devils for not valuing me enough to pay whatever the price was.

“Undermining” and “questioning management.” Come on, man. He said he thinks the trade situation could’ve been handled better “up top.” If that’s all it takes to undermine you and if that’s the kind of questioning that “stirs thing up” then it’s probably time for some skin to thicken up.
“He damn well knew” like… this is all very dramatic for what was actually said. You’ve got guys like yourself telling someone to shut his mouth and play hockey, someone who you would never say that to in person, and someone who is an actual person and not a hockey playing robot that exists solely for your entertainment… because he said “I think it could’ve been handled better”… hahaha.
We might need to pass around some smelling salts pretty soon for the amount of fainting going on due to this very serious transgression.
Seriously, have some perspective. This is a human being who is dealing with an actually uncomfortable and frustrating situation that impacts his actual life, and his reaction is “could have been handled better!” You’re just watching him go through it, and despite it having literally ZERO impact on your life, you’re saying things like “shut up and play” and “he damn well knew!” like some old timey weirdo and calling him “butthurt” lol. If he’s butthurt, what in the world are you?
EDIT: Realizing now he said “handled differently” and not even “handled better” hahaha oh my god, how is Conroy going to recover from this complete insubordination!

Personally, I hate when players answer questions the media asks during the time in which their job is to stand there and answer questions the media asks. I would prefer if they had scrums where the players avoided answering altogether. Just empty, soft silence, staring off into the distance.

Markstrom is free to say what he likes about the situation, and I am free to not like his comments. Love the guy but to me that does smack a little of throwing shade on Conroy. He may be justifiably frustrated with the situation but I don't think that's something you share in media unless you're trying to burn bridges.
That said, I'm going to go against the grain here and say you still don't trade the guy unless you get what you want. His contract is a sunk cost at this point, and you want a proven veteran around to mentor your up-and-coming "goaltender of the future". He's not a pending UFA, and he's a guy who (until today anyway) has been public about wanting to stay in Calgary. There is no rush to move him.
if the Devils offer up a deal we can't refuse, then yeah Connie would be crazy not to look at it - but I'm talking roster player (Mercer), pick (1st) and decent prospect at minimum. It's a reasonable price to pay for a proven NHL starting goaltender with term, and I really don't understand all the "just trade him for whatever" comments.
Give us what we want - or overpay - and sure, let's talk. Anything less than that? Kick rocks.

Conroy and Co. are rumored to have approached him and it might have gotten to the point where he waived the NTC and he thought it was a done deal.
And then the deal didn't happen.
You'd be having family discussions about moving, trying to figure out logistics of things, etc etc. And then it's just a "Ooops didn't happen"
And Markstrom would probably have a lot more details about what happened and why the trade would have broken down than we did.
So it really feels like if Markstrom has frustrations with management there might be good reason for it.
|
This certainly sounds pretty reasonable. At the same time, I'm not in a tizzy that Markstrom voiced some frustration (not saying you are, but in general) nor do I see it as a PR disaster for the Flames.

I could see something like:
To NJ
Markstrom
2024 3rd
To Cal
Holtz
Vanacek
Clarke
2024 2nd

Holtz, 1st and Vanecek for Markstrom @25% retention. Devils keep Mercer. Either that or Mercer, Casey, and Vanecek.
I value it as: Mercer > 1st > Holtz > Casey.

Personally I was really happy to hear those comments from Markstrom. Should really help grease the wheels of this trade and get it across the finish line!

I make a trip into Calgary to see a medical specialist and all this happens. This whole Markstrom thing is has become damn a soap opera with Fitz humming and hawing about what he wants to do. Marky has a right to be ticked at Conroy. I just hope Conroy tells Fitz to go and pound sand and come back with a better offer.
