Another thing to remember is that Markstrom is represented by Pat Morris. So nothing Markstrom says is off the cuff, Morris would have undoubtedly been involved/advised that it's okay to say something along those lines.

Steinberg and the 960 guys have talked about how Morris is pretty much the best in the business at helping facilitate trades for his players.

Maybe Markstrom wants out and this is his way to nudge the situation. He is 34 and likely looking to win the cup before he retires. Flames are not going to be in that position any time soon.

You know what you guys didn’t handle well? Playing good. That’s a wee bit more important that patting yourself on the back for handling trading pending UFAs when we’ve been bottom 10 in the league most of the year.

And I get Markstrom has played reasonably well this year, but come on. What he should be saying is that they have no one but themselves to blame because if the team had performed up to expectations, this wouldn’t be necessary.

Maybe from both a contract and trade perspective.

But honestly that's fine...Conroy has to do what's best for the team long term even if some of it did drag on a bit or if a trade that was close ended up falling through.

And the players dragged it on too with not being super clear on their intentions on being willing to re-sign or not.
I have a feeling things are trickling down into the locker room more under Conroy's regime than they were with Treliving.

You still don't fire shots to the media about it, but it appears lips might be a little looser between departments these days.

Under former regimes, it felt like players often didn't know where they were being traded until the trade was signed off.

The social media age is a different beast though. Noise is everywhere.

Almost every contract these days having a NMC or NTC or M-NTC doesn't help keep players out of the loop either.

I'm wondering if it's just all a show for Francis. Just wait until Francis makes a fool of himself again.

The retention aspect never made any sense as a requirement to a deal

Devils have more cap space than they know what to do with. We just used them a dead cap broker.

Just take Vanacek back and the numbers seem to work pretty easily for both sides..

Or he could have just asked his agent to request a trade. No need to sound like an entitled jerk and throw shots at management through the media. Maybe if you didn't play like absolute crap last year we are not in this position today.

Yeah, those clauses were way less commonplace 10-15 years ago.

Getting rid of the NTC/NMC needs to happen.

Oh you want to whine in the media? Off to Edmonton you go.

Ask for a trade? Because he's not too happy with whatever the process and communication was with latest potentially being traded situation?

He should get on the phone to his agent and say, "You call Craig right now and tell him, 'I was going to take a shot at management in an answer to Eric Francis but instead I'm requesting that you absolutely must trade me right now, I know I agreed to accept being traded, but now you must make whatever didn't work out work out! Or else I'm going to call Eric, so Salim can stir things up! So there!'"?

Love me a good old-fashioned spite trade.

Orrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

Trade Markstrom today, and unleash the era of the Wolf tomorrow, in front of, and in homage to, the Goalie God!

I'm of the opinion these need to end as well somehow in the next round of collective bargaining. I'm sure the PA will want the owners to concede something from their side in response.

They better trade him at full freight. I’ll be annoyed if they don’t because they ‘handled’ this season well

Doubt the Flames want Vanacek so the Devils can keep him.

I think he was told he was getting traded, it came right down to the wire, then the plug was pulled on it.

Stuff happens, shut your mouth.
