Another thing to remember is that Markstrom is represented by Pat Morris. So nothing Markstrom says is off the cuff, Morris would have undoubtedly been involved/advised that it's okay to say something along those lines.

Steinberg and the 960 guys have talked about how Morris is pretty much the best in the business at helping facilitate trades for his players.

Maybe Markstrom wants out and this is his way to nudge the situation. He is 34 and likely looking to win the cup before he retires. Flames are not going to be in that position any time soon.

Maybe from both a contract and trade perspective.

But honestly that's fine...Conroy has to do what's best for the team long term even if some of it did drag on a bit or if a trade that was close ended up falling through.

And the players dragged it on too with not being super clear on their intentions on being willing to re-sign or not.

I have a feeling things are trickling down into the locker room more under Conroy's regime than they were with Treliving.

You still don't fire shots to the media about it, but it appears lips might be a little looser between departments these days.

Under former regimes, it felt like players often didn't know where they were being traded until the trade was signed off.

The social media age is a different beast though. Noise is everywhere.

The retention aspect never made any sense as a requirement to a deal

Devils have more cap space than they know what to do with. We just used them a dead cap broker.

Just take Vanacek back and the numbers seem to work pretty easily for both sides..
