Mazda has been quietly positioning themselves as a brand that makes both premium economy and affordable luxury really well without having an uplevel brand, similarly to what Hyundai was up to prior to spinning off Genesis into its own marque.

However, Mazda has a far more consistent design language that I think will age better; every Mazda is instantly recognizable as one.

Hyundai seems to be all over the place; the cars and some of the crossovers have this very futuristic look, while others (mainly the bigger SUVs) are sticking to a more conventional formula. The Palisade looks like you could slap a Chevy Bowtie on the grille and you'd have a nicer and better-looking Chevy Traverse, albeit with L405 Range Rover-esque tail lamps. Yet the front end on the Kona looks like it comes with Tron lighting built in.

Apart from a more premium look and feel, any Mazda is almost always going to be the most fun and driver-focused car compared to its competition. The Koreans may offer more features for your dollar, Toyota/Honda may offer better reliability/resale... but the zoom zoom is for real. It's the enthusiast choice!

I've looked a lot of Mazda 3s and Honda Civics over the last couple of weeks. Hard to say the Mazda's are more fun to drive, but the Honda's feel more comfortable for the wife and I. Haven't really looked at Hyundai much though.

Mazdas have the most consistently attractive design. There is always some minor thing that stops it from being 100% (like the perfectly straight line on the back of the CX30 or or the slightly odd angle of the CX90 quarter), but the atrocity of 2010s aside, they’ve done a good job most of their time making objectively ‘nice’ looking vehicles.

Yea I don't know WTF they were doing in the 2010's. When the Mazda 3 first came out in 2004 it was the best looking compact sedan by a long shot, and it forced the other manufacturers to redesign theirs as they all looked so boring in comparison. Then they ####ed it up in 2010 and it wasn't until the 2019 redesign that the 3 looked cool again

I've been looking at Mazdas a lot recently. Big fan of the CX-50 and now that the inline 6 CX-70 is arriving. Tantalizing choices. With the CX-50/30 and the 3. The only drawback compared to modern cars is the torsion beam rear acle set up. It's choppy/dangerous if you push them hard enough.

They did it for cost savings but they kind of missed the mark on the 3 with independent rear suspension. They could totally win the market with it.

Only thing missing from mazda right now is a speed3 and the new rx which is coming.

The speed3 isn't ever coming back.

M440i (probably a tad out of range)
TTS

Already leaning M240i, anybody have any of these now or previously?

I owned the last gen M2 so doesn't really apply although that car was trouble free. B58 and ZF8 makes for one of the more bulletproof drivetrains available today.

Been researching for a while, does seem like the 240 is arguably the best bang for the buck in the class.

I love my Mazda 5.

It drives better then any other minivan, has far more interior space then the comparable SUV’s like the escape or CRV. A little hard on rear tires but other wise has been fantastically reliable.

Yeah, that too, eh?

Wanna know something funny? My dad bought one of those when I was about 19 just to flip. He saw it on Auto Trader for super cheap...only had a few hundred kms on it. We put 31s on it and it looked cool AF (for a Lada) and then he sold it and made $1500 or something goofy.

I drove it for a couple days just for fun. Turns out it wasn't fun and the 31s made a gutless Lada even moreso. It is a feather in my cap that I rolled in a Lada for a bit, though.

I learned to drive on a 1984 Omni, 5 speed with a clutch pedal that took herculean strength to push. No power steering or brakes. That thing was a beast to drive. I miss it like crazy.

ETA I would bet this Rivian drives a lot better than that Omni did!
