They're retooling. They need the kids to take on larger roles. This is exactly what they should do.

^ not to mention that this exact model is why the team is suddenly having success. Guys like Zary and Pospisil getting bumped up the lineup has been huge. Sell the old guys and let the young guys come up the ranks and prove their mettle. Reward the team with acquisitions in the offseason if you must.

Still in first wild card, back to winning more than losing and probably not falling out of a playoff spot. Doesn't sound like dead is an accurate descriptor.

Guys like Zary and Pospisil are just good too. They would be even better if they'd been getting development time for the last two years. Instead, the Flames had the Richie brothers taking key shootout attempts.

Replace "ritchie" with Johnson and the other two with Solovyov and Kuznetsov. This is the situation we are rumored to be engaging in by friedman here.
I think it's just fine and totally agreeable if we are the ones getting a piece to take on this contract, but it makes no sense at all to pay assets to block our younger players at this stage.

Trying to stay competitive is the flames m.o.
They've moved the UFAs because they had to not because they wanted to.
If they had it their way lindholm, hanifin and tanev would all of been re-signed.
Friedman said today that the Flames made a last ditch effort to keep Tanev, but he wanted out to a contender.
I'll be dissapointed but I won't be supprised when they hang onto Markstrom and buy a defender at the deadline to "send the right message" because "you just need to get in".
I also won't be supprised in the offseason when they make a big run at Stephenson and Demelo.

That is for the team he currently works for and the possible team he will move to. If Hanifin has an 8 team NT and the agent is telling other teams he won't sign then he is limiting whatever team of the other 23 the Flames could trade him to. They are basically trying to create a full NTC which has never been negotiated.
If the Flames know that his preferred teams are Florida and/or Boston then they can approach them differently. If nothing can be worked out then the Flames negotiate with all teams as a rental. But if his agent is screwing those chances up then they low ball, restricting the Flames business. Tampering.

This board is going to lose its mind when the Flames throw money at Jake Debrusk this off season.

2004 was the best. But it ruined the franchise's ability to think logically long term.
It seemed like all we had to do was get in, but in reality we were a team that played well defensively and had a hall of famer leading points and goal scoring up front, held back by lack of consistent goal tending. When we acquired better than consistent goal tending (Kipper should be in the hall in my books) we were all of a sudden a contender for multiple years following.
It wasn't a just get in scenario then. It has never been.

It really pisses me off if it's true that his agent is contacting teams and telling them that he will not sign there. That's tampering and the League is Allowing it

I think that Conroy will still get a haul if he trades Hanifin purely as a rental.

Its more likely that teams are asking to talk to him to gauge his interest in signing.
If we say "No you cant"....that would be just the same as the agent saying "No, he wont sign long term there"
my point still stands, all this is not new info, there are 2 Hanifin values. One as a rental and one with him extended.

I got a feeling we’ll be disappointed with the return for Hanifin.
PS: I said the same thing before we traded Lindholm, and we ended up with a haul!

I feel the same way, but hopefully dealing Markstrom bridges that gap

Plus isn't that the point of all this. Teams want to know if Hanifin would consider signing there. Hanifin is telling those teams he won't sign with either now or in July that he won't sign with them.
That trade wouldn't go down anyway. No team is going to get all the way to the trade call with the league without already getting an answer to that question.
So now Hanifin's agent has told schlubs like Holland in Edmonton to stop calling, Noah won't be signing with you at any point.
