Tkachuk also had a destination in mind and held all the cards and we still got a good return. They can make this work.

Hate to say it but if the Flames knew he was selective to which teams he’d sign with and they still gave permission to the agent to negotiate with other teams, this is on them. Who is his agent anyway? Seems like a dick move to not just say, “we’ll leave it to the offseason and see” to everyone inquiring. Keeps his value up and at least gives his team a chance to get some assets back. This way it’s a dick move to screw your existing team by now being explicit. It’s a shark business. Gotta be smarter when it comes to these idiot agents too.

The Flames roster has fewer NTCs than most teams. If NTCs are a problem, they’re a league-wide problem.

The assets that the Flames want are a little different, I can't see trading for another player unless he's under certain age. Florida likedthat last deal with Tkachuk because he was younger. The Flames aren't looking for a skilled player in return they're looking for younger assets.

Yeah, Seravalli actually said it wasn’t the fairly skimpy NTC list - it was extending. There was even a suggestion he implied that the “won’t sign” message was being sent to even teams like Vegas, for bargaining power I suppose.
I wonder if Hanifin has his eye on a team that would be more willing to just sign him for 7 as a UFA than trade for him now.

You can blame Tre for a lot of things but hanifins contract is not one of them. Had him signed for under $5 million for 6 years is a good deal. He can still be traded to many teams , he just want to sign an extension to a certain amount of teams that is the problem. That has nothing to do with Tre.

His agent is Pat Brisson. Not sure if Conroy gave permission. The imagined conversation Seravalli described was one of those “shooting the breeze, and BTW how’s Noah doing” things. Which is tampering IMO if Conroy didn’t OK it. But hard to prove.

It seems Calgary should stay away from American players. Not a happy ending with most of the latest ones.

IF the agent is contacting other teams and telling them a player under contract to another team WON'T sign with them then that is tampering and the agent will get sanctioned. A player, and his reps, can not have contact with another team while under contract.

The team can give permission to talk and that often happens. And there’s plenty of back room talk that approaches the line but doesn’t cross it, and even if it does, can’t be proven.

Fair. Actually I walk back my comment. Brisson I understand has a good reputation. But still I get annoyed when players have been treated well and they still find a way to screw over teams. It’s a two way street but I just wish there was more help to the team they’ve been with for so long. Who cares if you have to play out of a team you don’t want to sign with long term, if you have to play there for two months? Pick up your big boy pants. Why does he have to talk extension now. Let it wait til off season. I’m so annoyed hearing this recent news as Hanifin should easily get a first plus more even as a rental.

Yeah this puts the Flames at a disadvantage. If you know that you're one of two teams, they could just wait it out. Knowing that those team/s could just put out a low offer. Saying no to certain teams has the potential to drive down the price.

How often do pending deadline acquisition UFA players sign extensions with their new team? It seems like most of the time it doesn't happen. It's nice if you can work something out and get another asset, but it's more of a bonus and shouldn't necessarily be expected.

Definitely been a trend with American born players on this team. I hope management keeps that in mind going forward.
Canadians and Euros going forward. Not to mention how easily you can lose a prospect who wants to sign elsewhere when coming out of the NCAA.

On one hand you take out a big chunk of the talent pool.
On the other hand I think COVID changed some of these dynamics when these guys were totally cut off from their families.
I think at minimum you have to factor it in as a risk element. I don't think you can shut the door completely, but you have to weigh it for sure.

Gaudreau (8 years), Hanifin (6 years) and Tkachuk (6 years) spent most of their prime playing days in Calgary. The fact that they chose to move on seems like a very short-sighted reason to just avoid American players altogether.
Oh, and Blake Coleman says, "Hi."

Can’t paint USA players with the same brush. I will say we have had issues with players from the eastern seaboard. Midwest players tend to be more willing to sign long term in Canada. Kyle Connor for example. Joel Otto is from Minnesota and settled here. Scouts need to do their homework on players from the New England area, but shouldn’t be disqualifying players basis birth certificate.

I agree our GM is American, I think if anybody would have a better opinion on signing Americans he would have a good read.

True. Would not want to remove American players from your draft considerations. Want to take best player available. It just sucks cause the flames have been burned by this more than any other Canadian team in recent memory. What it does is cut your competitive window short… that’s what has happened with Gaudreau/Tkachuk/Hanifin and, to some extent, Fox. The flames have a similar experience in this next iteration of the team after the rebuild where they have several American stars players that are core member of the team that sign shorter second contracts that get them to free agency early. If the flames reached their goal of being competitive by 2027, they may only have a 4-5 year window after that to capitalize on keeping all their core pieces in that scenario. All speculation of course and who knows if the flames will have the same struggles with American players in the next version of the flames - especially with the new arena.

Friedman throwing out Colorado as a potential for Hanifin. Don’t want to waste the year they are having. Exactly what we need. A team going all in and has the pieces we want
