These trade grades are a joke.

They made their proposals here: https://theathletic.com/5278873/2024...shared_article

2024 2nd
Ty Dellandrea
2026 4th

Actual trade:

2024 2nd
Grushnikov
Conditional 3rd

So overall it's pretty close depending on what you think of Dellandrea or Grushnikov.

One flag though would be Dellandrea will be 24 this summer, and requires waivers. So not 100% guaranteed to be a long term piece of he doesn't make the team next year out of camp.

More runway with the younger prospect.

That’s for a whole season. Multiply by 1/4 for the 21 games Dallas has left.

One side gets graded A+ and other a D lmao

On a trade that literally just happened and includes assets that are either 20 years old and some that aren't even officially drafted players yet.

Not to mention, the price was pretty in line with multitudes of historical trades that involve an older pending UFA top 4 defenseman going the other way.

Yet somehow it's already a landslide victory for Dallas? haha
Dallas gets a player for $1.2M cap that almost every team in the league, certainly playoff bound teams, want desperately. And they didn't have to give up much at all...that's why it's an A for them.

The Flames scouts do appear to have a thing for smooth skating, stay at home Russian defencemen with size. Half the Flames' blueline next year may be Russian/Belarussian.

That is 1/4. Of cap hit, not salary.

To be fair tho, teams that acquire high prized deadline players are always graded well by these writers. A) Team is usually good already. B) This piece will supposedly put them over the top.

The story writes itself. But the truth is you won't be able to judge this trade for a while and honestly- what DAL is receiving and their success (or not) with Tanev isn't really tied to whether the deal was good for the Flames without knowing any of the other offers on the table.

Takes me back to when the Flames were declared "the unanimous deadline day winners" back in 2009 when they loaded up and then promptly blew a double digit point lead for the division and then got KO'ed first round of the playoffs.
The Score is also utter trash now.

They gave up pretty much what every team gives up every year for rental top 4 Dmen.

'I Play Strong Hockey' - Grushnikov brings work ethic, winning attitude to Flames

Quote:
When speaking to Artem Grushnikov by phone, the positivity radiates through the speaker.

The newest member of the Flames organization is pumped to get things started with his new squad, after being acquired Wednesday from the Dallas Stars in a deal that sent Chris Tanev to Texas.

He’s been away from his family in Russia for the past three years while chasing his NHL dream, one that now sees him land in Calgary after nearly three years in the Stars organization.

“I can’t explain my emotions right now,” Grushnikov said Wednesday evening. “I’m so excited to be part of Calgary; I’m heading back to Canada and I’m so excited.”
Quote:
According to Flames GM Craig Conroy, the defensive side of the game is Grushnikov’s forte.

“He knows what he is as a player,” Conroy told Flames TV’s Brendan Parker Wednesday. “He’s kind of a defensive defenceman: he kills penalties, he’s strong on pucks, he’s simple, direct with his puck plays. You’re going to look at the numbers, the numbers won’t be there but that’s not what he does well; what he does well is on the D side of the puck.

“When you have guys like Jeremie Poirier and Hunter (Brzustewicz), more offensive guys, he’s a good mix with those kind of players.”

I think people need to cut Conroy some slack. Some people are still stuck on the crap Treliving did. Have some faith in the choices/decisions Conroy makes.

Yeah, it's more of "how'd the teams 'do' given the entire situation and options out there" then the actual projection on his the magic beans turn out 5 years from now (or if those picks are traded again before that).

Same writers for the Score gave the Flames a B for the Kuzmenko deal.

I think part of the D grade is for the fact that Flames didn't wait for or push the price up by waiting another week...as I've said a few times, I think Dallas would still be there in a week looking at Tanev just as seriously.

Sounds to me Conroy got the player he wanted.

It's far more likely the Stars get "nothing" from this trade than the Flames. If they lose in the first couple rounds which are both coin flips

NHL Network, just wow, where do they get these idiots.
"I'll need all my university degrees to figure out how this retained salary works."
"It looks like they've found a way to retain more than 50%"
"There's geniuses at work for these teams that find ways to make trades happen.

Then he says this trade might trigger a Flames selloff

Let's not forget that Tanev signed with us as a free agent so our cost was nothing.

come on, we traded a 34 goal team leading scorer for a 13 goal 8th in team scoring guy who was already 2 years in the league (so had his nhl legs under him at that point). If you weren't at least a little worried we were getting Hegmaned before the season started you weren't being 100% honest with yourself. That it has worked out so well is great.

Excellent deal for Dallas. Didn’t give up much and solidified their defense for a cup run. Great work by Jim Nill!

In other words, the Flames have a plan. They know where the guy fits, in the scheme of things. Treliving brought in players but sometimes they didn't always fit. Sounds like Conroy is paying more attention to the details of the puzzle. This isn't just Conroy it was the whole management team and scouting that felt this player fits the what they are looking for. It sounds like really good scouting, they have a plan for this kid.
