Mostly because the Flames seem to have bad luck when it comes these conditions.
if it were the only asset maybe

but being the 3rd asset in the deal, I would rather have the option for a more valuable asset then a lesser certainty

It’s $2.25M x 1/2 retention x 1/4 of a season. $281k roughly, is worth a 4th round pick. So what’s $7M worth…

I agree with this from The Score. Not the "lost faith in Conroy part", but most of the rest of it.
Dallas is getting the peice it needs and the Flames really didn't make them pay a premium for it.

Obviously, it would have been nice to get a 1st out of this deal, but that was not in the cards. But a late 2nd + a prospect + a future 3rd, if it works out that way, is pretty close in value to the 31st or 32nd overall.

Now I need to see Grushnikov for myself, to get a glimpse of what Conroy & Co. (and the Stars and their scouts) see in this kid that the analytics don't capture. That means I'll have to dig way, way down among the pocket lint and dust bunnies in my wallet, and pony up for some Wranglers tickets.

Curse you, Craig Conroy!

Not gonna lie, I am very upset with this deal. We got a long shot NHLer (hopefully I’m wrong), and a 2nd rounder for our best dman…

Conroy is not dumb so I am just assuming that there was no market for a 1st for Tanev which is shocking.

Happy with the sharangovic and kuzmenko trade. Not happy with this.

I think Sharangovic was a below par trade in the summer, a meh trade in the fall, and it was well into the winter before it really started feeling like a good trade. Let things take time.

If Grushnikov is the next Jamie Macoun, Robyn Regehr or Chris Tanev, Flames hit this out of the park. If he flops, but whomever Calgary ends up picking in that spot ends up being a franchise player, then Calgary hits it out of the park. Point is, you can choose to be upset about this, but there very well may not be anything to be upset about.

Didn't Conroy just say not very long ago for teams to put in their best offers? He did that with Lindholm when he was offered what Vancouver offered, and then went ahead and made that trade. I do believe that he took the best package available, as I believe very strongly that Conroy is no idiot. Maybe - MAYBE a team like Edmonton could have offered slightly more, but IF they did that, it would take a substantially better offer from them, not just 'slightly more'. I doubt Conroy would have turned down something substantially better from Edmonton or even Toronto.

This was the best deal on the table, and this does have a really good chance of being a huge win down the road. It most certainly was NOT a lousy return for us to be upset with.

If someone is asking to retain 2 million on Markstrom for two years that should be at least an extra 1st rounder.

We add “I play strong hockey” to “Let’s go playoffs” and get a winning combination! GFG!

Honestly, I think the Lindholm deal/return set people up to be upset.
Think about this for a second.

How much would you pay for a 34 year old defensive defenseman rental? I don’t think a first rounder was ever that realistic.

It’s a fair deal for both teams honestly.

It’s only shocking because of past stupidity. Realistically no one should be trading a 1st for a rental. The chances of it working out are so slim.

It was posted. And I asked how they graded the Toffoli trade.

The problem with trade grades is that they usually just compare players. In reality the grade should be against what other trades were available (a complete guess) and just riding to UFA (bad).

These same outlets criticized the Flames when they signed him as a UFA

Other things to consider:

- Conroy was playing chicken all year. How many times have we seen Tanev go down the tunnel? We can all breathe a sigh of relief now.

- Dallas could end up playing Edmonton in the playoffs.

- Conroy is sticking to the plan despite being in the mushy middle.

If that’s the best offer that was available (besides Edmonton of course), I’m glad to see it done. I wonder if a couple things played into the flames making this trade instead of waiting any longer hoping to get a first round pick:

1. It’s possible Tanev was not only holding up the market for other sellers but also could have been holding up the market for Hanifin. Despite being different players in style, they are both top four defencemen and the market for Hanifin has been limited according to rumours. Teams that were in on Tanev and missed out may pivot and go after Hanifin now. The pool of available defencemen just got smaller with lots of time left for the market to shift to Hanifin.
2. Conroy likely told all the GM’s interested to table their final offer because he is not waiting for the TDL with Tanev. He likely said that tonight was the TDL for Tanev and it was their last chance to make the trade. Some GMs might have taken him for his word and offered less than what Dallas was offering just cause they truly were not willing to pay a 1st round pick. Others may have thought Conroy was bluffing and was just trying to get them to blink in negotiations - if so, those GMs now know Conroy should be taken seriously when he says to table your best offer now. This could come in handy for future trades (such as Hanifin or Markstrom).

Media outlets posting clickbait articles after a trade involving a Canadian team? I’m shocked I tells ya.

But why lol? That would mean the Flames could have had a better return... And I don't think you're a Leafs fan, are you? Could be wrong...
