Tanev's value may have dropped at the deadline anyway. I'm sure Craig got the most out of the deal. I doubt there were going to be any first rounders offered for Tanev. Like others I'm happy to see moves being made and the foundation being (finally) set for the rebuid. Kudos to Tanev for being a warrior for us, and being one of our better free agent acquisitions over the years. Like others I would not be opposed to bringing Tanev back in the off-season.

The Manson trade that someone posted is a spot on comparison.
Same type of player
Same type of return.

I think guys like Manson and Tanev should be worth more, but that seems to be the going rate.

2nd and a B prospect was what I was expecting so happy enough with this

I thought all the Stankoven and Bourque talk was for Hanifin, if anyone thought Tanev was getting that they're nuts

Yeah, it sounds like we traded an older pending UFA Tanev, for a 20 year old potential future Tanev and a 2nd rounder. Way too early to judge this trade, but if I had to, I'd call it a push with the potential to be a win.

FC called Grushnikov the top defensive d-man in his draft.

They can't all be Brz, Morin or Poirier. And you don't want them all to be.

The trade looks fine if they weren't also retaining $2.25M. Essentially paid that for a 2 rounder, and its just tanev vs prospect swap.

Fair critique. I think my disappointment is rooted in the fact that the return is only hope, unlike the Lindholm deal where we got Kuzmenko,.a bona fide NHLer.

Yeah, other teams (and I think a lot were tire kickers) may have just decided to make lesser trades for lesser defensive D-Men and crossed their fingers.

They are retaining for 23 games...why does it matter?

For those saying that Conroy should have waited longer, keep in mind that, when he got that firm offer, he would have gone back to the other GMs and said 'I have an offer, this is your last chance'. If they aren't beating it now, they aren't beating it later.

Looking like Sharangovich all over again with the young player.

And somehow people still don't have faith in the scouting staff. They were waiting on Dallas to sign off on the player because he's been a target of theirs. I say look out.

Also lost in all of this is how great this is for the Wranglers.

Given that it's a Dallas draft pick, I've got a good feeling about Grushnikov. They always seem to hit

NJD take on salary to help broker the deal because Calgary is about to eat salary on Marky and Vanacek?

Must be something like that, else why would NJD do us a solid?

Explain it to me because I am dumb.

Since the draft is mostly a crapshoot, the best way to get good players from the draft is to have a lot of picks.

Tanev signed as (free agent) cost us nothing and gave us good work and now we cashed out on him 34 year's old.
Great trade

And great against greaser playoff chances

To obtain the Stars' fourth-round pick in 2026, New Jersey agreed to cover 25 per cent of Tanev's remaining contract this season and traded to Calgary the rights to unsigned drafted goaltender Cole Brady.

I think the retention part might be wrong though.
