This deal is bad mostly because I miss Tanev, but also because a late 2nd, seemingly meh at best prospect and am illusionary 3rd aren't likely to do much.

I feel Conroy has an eye for player evaluation based on Sharangovich, Greer, Pachal. Obviously, those players all have different impact levels, but they’ve all been shrewd adds in my mind. Let’s wait to see how Grushnikov turns out and who they get with the 2nd.
That said, I’m a fan of Byron Bader and Scott Wheeler, so I’m not over the moon either.

Four years ago, the Flames signed Tanev as a free agent and the general consensus was that year 4 (and for many, year 3) were going to be painful, but hopefully the first 2 (or 3) years would be good enough to make it worthwhile.
Now, 4 years later, Tanev - after being nothing short of a warrior - is traded for a 2nd, a 2nd equivalent, and a conditional 3rd, and some people are outraged.

We can use the 2nd to climb up in the draft as well. The more picks you have the more options you give yourself.

LHD Artyom Grushnikov,6'2"174lbs (Krasnaya Armiya Moskva,MHL): Hasn't played any hockey this season, as he was supposed to be joining the OHL's Hamilton Bulldogs. In 2019-20, he put up 5pts in 29 games as a 16/17 year old in the MHL, a men's pro league in Russia. The fact that he was trusted in that league at that age, should tell you something about this kid. At this point, Grushnikov is known as a top-notch, very reliable defensive defenseman, who can also lead the rush out of the zone.
Grush has good size and 4-way skating ability. His edgework and agility are near-elite, he can change direction instantly. He has the straight-ahead speed to keep up with the smaller, speedier forwards. His stellar backwards skating allows him to push opponents towards the boards, and out of high-danger. Grushnikov's bread and butter is his defensive game, he's never out of position. He guards the crease, ties players up, and outmuscles attackers down low. Great at taking away the middle of the zone, breaks down passing lanes, and pushes opponents to the outside. He's exceptional when it comes to shot-blocking, be it with his body, or deflecting it with his stick. Best of all, he consistently makes smart decisions under pressure-he'll break down plays, retrieve the puck, and get the play going the other way, either by skating it out himself, or through one of his other specialties- his stretch pass, which he does as good, or better than anyone in this draft. He's also able to choke out rushes in transition. He's very physical-he doesn't hesitate to lay the body, or rough up an attacker.
Grushnikov is an excellent distributor of the puck, not only by the aforementioned stretch-pass-he can thread the needle in any zone. His passes are often hard and crisp, and he's the master of the slap-pass. On the PP, he walks the line and scans for open lanes, and he gets good velocity on his slapshot. He can jump into the rush, and lead the attack. He's excellent in transition, and can enter or exit zones with his feet, or his tape-to-tape pass. If a team can harness and develop his offense further, you will have a top-pairing defenseman- and he has the skills. His speed, shot and passing are all there. He could use work on his shooting, as he gets blocked, deflected, or misses the net-he needs to learn the same patience he wields in the defensive zone, and select the right time to shoot. His skating could use work in acceleration, and top speed- the mechanics are already there, and his edges and agility are fantastic. This is a very safe pick, as he's sure to develop into a second pairing D, at worst. He would be the ideal player to play with a more offensive-minded partner. Lots to like about this kid. Look for him to go in the 2nd/3rd round.

This sounds a lot like what Zadorov said about growing up in the Russian system, as a defenceman you learn to play defence and then learn the offense as you grow. If he ends up as a good defensive guy that throws in 15-20 points you will have eventually replaced Tanev and gained 14 years in age.

That's what I'm worried about. He has the tools to be more involved in the other side of the ice- good puck skill, passing ability, etc. I guess we'll see what happens.

You're right. Problem is, he still hasn't progressed in the numbers department. As many have pointed out though, Tanev didn't exactly set the world on fire in those years either.

Okay, a few thoughts:
Conroy just rolled the clock back on the role and type of player Tanev is by 14 years. Grushnikov sounds like a prototypical Tanev replacement, but is just 20. He offers a nice complement to the offensive d-men we have in Poirier or Brustewicz in the system.
He adds a 2nd round pick for a pure defensive d-man. I know his ask was a 1st round pick, but that's how negotiation goes. You always ask for a bit more than what you realistically expect, and then the market meets your real ask. Conroy got the pick he wanted here.
The conditional 3rd is a nice throw in. If it happens, cool. If not? No biggie.
Considering Tanev is a pure rental for Dallas, I think this is a pretty solid deal. Getting top offensive prospects or 1st round picks was always a bit too much to expect. Tanev could get hurt in his next game blocking a shot and be out for the season. There's just too much risk around a guy like Tanev to break the prospect bank so to speak.
Here's the thing...look at the young defense corps that Conroy has now...
Poirier-Brustewicz
Grushnikov-Morin
Solovyov-Kuznetsov
Hurtig-Jurmo
All these guys are 23 or younger.
Not to mention that we still will have Weegar, Andersson, and very likely, Kylington for the near future. I'm pretty pleased with that group overall. Perhaps one more really good d-man prospect with all the draft capital, and we have a new d-corps for the future. Not every guys will pan out, but I'm betting about 4 out of those 8 have long NHL careers.

It really seems bad that this was the best he could get 9 days out. Should have made the Star's wait it out and see what other offers came up. Time will tell but the Athletic article so far is calling it a A+ for the Stars and a D for the Flames.

Gustav Forsling was a similar player. Good defensively, great skater but just completely unable to put up offensive numbers. Did not create any offence.

Is there really anybody outraged? Some people like myself think it’s pretty meh. It’s not bad but not great either. Also I’m not sure he is a 2nd equivalent at this stage and the conditions of the 3rd round pick aren’t very good.

I am sure someone has mentioned this, but another gain from this trade is strengthening the Flames' own pick. This is a big leg that just got chopped off. Flames will falter in the standings as removing Tanev from on and off the ice is going to really stress this team. I would be surprised if they are 500 in the next 4 games up until the deadline. Maybe they win the game on Saturday running on the fumes of the ceremony, but but this trade is sure to start pushing the Flames over that cliff.

My kids are devastated. If we trade Hanifin and Markstrom too it will be a sad group of kids over here.

If Tanev is such an A why didn't anyone offer more?
Athletic had some ridiculous proposals the last while that were never realistic
