Completely arbitrary starting point - but after 25 games (early December):
LA 16-5-4 36 points
Calgary 10-12-2 22 points
Since then:
Calgary 19-13-3 41 points
LA 13-14-6 32 points
Kings actually peaked at 16-4-3 so they've been an under 500 team for a while now.
Coincidentally, I just looked at the standings since the 2-7-1 start. Since then (Nov 3rd):
CGY: 27-18-4, 58 pts (3rd in Pacific)
LAK: 23-17-8, 54 pts (4th in Pacific)
VGS: 23-19-6, 52 pts (5th)
For the last 4 months, the Flames have been a better team than both LA and Vegas. Unfortunately, that first month was a disaster. And that just shows how much a bad start can hurt a season.

If the last two games are Huska hockey I will shut my mouth and eat a huge serving of crow.
Huberdeau is starting to make the little passes where he seems to dish the puck off in the middle of stick handling so you don't know where ts going to go. Really deceptive and effective.
Hunt matches up on the Huberdeau line really well, and I don't hate Sharangovich at centre, especially since he is just starting to play there at the NHL level.
Hard not to cheer for this team the way they are playing with everyone chipping in.

Those were quite incredible. It's almost like he loses the handle while carrying, but in reality it goes to an open teammate. His arsenal of passes is pretty big. He can make the long ones and the short deceptive ones. He's backed on on only doing super hard ones that his teammates often bobbled.

It’s a bit of a shame that the team is probably going to be hamstrung over the next week or so. They are really rounding into form. But Nashville seems to be seperating from the pack which is a problem.
But in Conroy’s defence. The flip side to how well they are playing is how terrible they were at the start of the season and how many times they didn’t show up against teams they should have easily beat.
Guess we’ll see what ultimately happens. But this year will be a shame if they miss the playoffs again and get gutted. Looks like it might be a turning point though too. Maybe the silver lining.
That could be partly attributed to the fact that there are some players that just wasn't giving an effort and holding the team back. I'm talking about the ones we've traded or are no longer here.. Lindholm's lack of effort, Dube, Adam. When you got one or several guys not giving an effort it affects the whole line/s Walker was another one but I think sending him down for a stint might have woken him up. I think the big difference between the beginning of the season and now is the fact that we don't have those guys on the team; And we've strengthened our defense.
The Flames have had a history of having too many players that were passengers or played when they felt like it.

It's a shame he doesn't have a one-time machine on the opposite wing on the power play.
He often zips insanely hard cross ice passes through everyone that have the goalie still moving, but we don't have anyone with an elite one-timer to convert them.
He’s pulled a Klingberg- turned down a fat contract that flattered him, bet on himself, then face-planted (albeit less dramatically than Klingberg).
Columbus might overpay for him given he has established chemistry with Gaudreau, plus they need a centre like him. Lindy seems like the type that would enjoy being in a non-hockey market.

That one never made sense to me because he seemed like a Sutter guy.
Rooney had a pretty good training camp (surprised a lot of us in camp I remember).
Was good the first handful of games of the season.
But was scapegoated for a goal against in the game against the Oilers (the goal where McDavid beat everyone down the ice and Markstrom let in a soft goal on a shot from the wall that was a game winner), and then never got out of Sutter's dog house after that.
In fairness to Sutter though he had that crazy sequence (either his last game or close to it), where he was all along in front of the net with Lucic ready to center it only to assume he was in his own zone and cycle into the breakout formation.
Have never seen that ... before or since. It was like coaching timbits.

I blame the RA suspension!
otoh while everything being said is true- this team has been actively selling (already) throughout. even if , in retrospect, Zadorov and Lindholm are being argued as addition by subtraction- this team is not being managed (and that's appropriate- to be clear) as a team trying to make the playoffs but those pesky players...I like it
Worse news would be giving up anything significant for this team’s playoff run.

At the end of his line's shift, Fiala stops up just inside the blueline and throws an intercepted blind horizontal pass instead of dumping it in and changing. Its broken up by Doughty but he can't control it, and the Flames go right up the middle in the gap created by Fiala changing late.

The universe is trying to bounce Blake from LA. We are 1 more injury away from being unable to compete. Anderson, Kempe, Grundstrom, Arvidson, and who is next ?
The Blake thing to do will be trade our first them have us 10 points out of a playoff spot with 4 games left to play and then he quits so he can’t be fired!

Injuries actually save Blake's job. It gives him an excuse for failure.

Win or lose this is one of the worst performances since the Willie D. era.
Are Kempe and Anderson the real leaders that get the team going? Look lost without them.
They looked better without Doughty that year than they do without Anderson.
Dont wanna single anyone out because its a team effort but Gavrikov has been struggling since the Islanders game.
Quote:
While everyone is feeling real down, let's just understand why this team does this. Because they are mentally WEAK. They get butthurt when they lose big games, like yesterday. Plus losing juice. And this is the result we get. Kaliyev looks like he's out there on roller skates with clay wheels.
Quote:
It's not Talbot. That's way too easy of an excuse. The whole team in front of him isn't playing. Couple defensemen are constantly hanging the team out to dry and have been doing it for two weeks.
Dubious Dubois

PLD is just a loser man. There’s no way around it. There’s no way this guy should’ve fetched that return or that contract. The lapses in effort and his body language just cement my thoughts on this guy. The rumblings were right. This guy is Anthony Rendon as a hockey player.

This team has so many holes, is it even worth trying to fill them before the trade deadline? They need to face up to the fact that this is not a very good hockey club, just slightly above average at best, and they’re not built for playoff hockey.

Same story from the last two seasons. Such an waste of talent! Just go 2013 San Jose, trade some guys with value, get some goons and agitators and just have some fun in the playoffs. I would even consider trading gravikov and Danault

If LA has any guts, they'll buy Dubois' contract out this summer. Given his age, they would only have to pay 1/3 of the salary out. I seriously think that is the best option for them.

Outside of Matthews and Tkachuk the top of that draft underachieved big time. A redraft is probably Matthews, Tkachuk, Fox, Thompson, Keller, McAvoy, Debrincat, Chychrun, Keller, Bratt, Kyrou, all before you get to Laine (and don't even talk about Puljujarvi and Juolevi).
