Interesting. I wonder if it is still fallout from the Berube thing

What's the deal with Petterson? Does he just not want to play in Vancouver, or is it a money thing? That would be a real blow to the Canucks if he leaves, similar to how we lost Chucky.
Edit: Just saw Blaster's response above. Weird, I thought with a competitive team, Vancouver would actually be a pretty desired location (all things considered) vs. a smaller market team like Calgary / Edmonton / Winnipeg, especially for European players who you don't need to worry about pining to play in their home countries.

Monday, Febuary 26th trade deadline season Predictions:
1. NJ and Calgary finally push the Markstrom trade through the finish line. Flames get Holtz, unconditional 1st in 2024 and NJ get 25% retention.
2. Florida capitulated, sending Anton Lundell 1 for 1 for Noah Hanifin.
3. Tanev to Dallas for Dellandrea and a 1st in 2025.
4. Mangiapane to Detroit for a 2024 2nd round pick.
5. Flames extend Kylington 5 years at 4.5

I've actually come full circle on this and I'm leaning toward the "keep Markstrom" camp now. I was all horned up for the NJ trade and I would still be OK with moving him but only if the return is an absolute King's ransom. Otherwise I think we move Hanifin and Tanev then see if Marky can still get us into a wild card spot. If it doesn't work then we move him over the summer or maybe next season, but as long as Marky is on the team we at least have a chance to stay somewhat competitive.

Plus I think the Flames might actually go hunting for a LHD with term after they've conducted their pending UFA business.
I'd use that Vancouver pick to land one I liked.

Eat bread is worth more than a 2nd, even if you’re not retaining. He’s becoming criminally underrated because he exploded for 35 goals one year. He’s durable, plays a solid game most nights, and is in line with his career averages atm. Some teams will even spend a little more if they’re getting a player with term left, see Treliving when he traded for Toffoli.

I'm not too thrilled with the idea of moving Mangiapane. The Backlund line is the single best thing about this squad IMO.

Is he? I don't agree. He's got moments but he doesn't pass the eyeball test most nights. And he doesn't jive anywhere else in the line up outside of the Back/Coleman pairing.
Which that spot specifically would be required for newer younger players to learn on.
And, I don't see him being a long term fit in CGY. Sprinkle in those rumors he wants a change of scenery and poof.

They're a close second after the Kadri and kids line.

Just a thought but given where the Devils are, and if discussions are still underway, I’d bet they’re not offering the ‘24 1st, it’s likely the ‘25 pick their offering.

No kidding; Mangiapane - Backlund - Coleman have been one of the most consistent lines all season for us.

Unless it’s an overpay there is zero reason to move Mangiapane, move next year with the next host of UFAs when you’re certainly going to get more for him than a 2nd round pick now. His line is considered the 3rd line too so there really is no reason to supplant him in favour of a Coronato or a Pettersen or a Schwindt ect. At least not right now; next year is soon enough.
With Markstrom I understand the reasoning of trading him now with Wolf knocking on the door and the Flames needing to bottom out. I don’t see the same good reasoning with Mangiapane to trade him now, especially just for a 2nd.

Mangiapane is 5th for forwards in points / 60 5 on 5, and 5th for forwards in xGF% (both include Kuzmenko with limited Calgary ice time).

He's also a guy who's probably more valuable in a trade next year when more team's have cap space and there is less of a commitment on his contract.

I don’t think so. If anything with the past couple years’ selloff at St. Louis, they’ve shown me they’re an open honest organization not just going for it if they don’t see themselves as legit contenders. What that likely means is they know Kyrou will be expecting franchise money and term shortly and they don’t think he’s worth it. So why not maximize their return now to a sucker who may not mind making a mistake. Not too different than how Anaheim may be viewing Zegras currently. Learning organizations are a step ahead of others.

No.
Make the pick.
Always make the pick. This team needs to make the picks.

If anything it’s capital the Flames can use to trade up and snag Tij if that’s a priority for the franchise. Multiple 1sts at this years draft is a requirement IMO, the more the better.

Just what I thought, Mangiapane is underrated here. He’s been a ‘set it and forget it’ type player for sometime in my eyes, you don’t have to worry about what you’ll get from Mangi most nights. Hang on to him and trade him next deadline is the right approach, he’s not burning a hole in the Flames pocket that’s for sure and there are other pressing matters at hand. Save for an overpay or Mangi being part of a bigger deal with a GM preferring contracts with term (Leafs/Tre) I don’t see the Flames moving on from eat bread just yet. Cheers for the analytical viewpoint as always Bingo.
