Mostly just the Devils sucking and the fact that it fell apart a second time at the last minute. The only things that changes things are Conroy walking back on his ask or the Devils stepping up their offer but doesn't feel like that is in the cards for now.

Of course it's baked in. If it doesn't happen, everyone will pivot. Until then, it's baked in.

The last report we got from Sec was that the teams had re-engaged in talks but that it was a complex deal being discussed.
I still think something gets done here, after the game against the Oil Hanfin was discussed as well and NJ is apparently one of the interested teams there as well. Something around a retained Marky and extended Hanifin to NJ is my best guess.

In before Sec drops the "ship has sailed" gif.
Based on everything, NJ leaked the trade before both teams agreed to the compensation for the retention, and now NJ is too far out of the playoffs. Why would Markstrom waive if they are just as likely to miss the playoffs as the Flames?

Taking a while to get to 5000

Devils win 3 in a row with a guy like Markstrom and they're back in it and riding high on confidence.
This ain't dead IMO

I think they are more interested in an RD than an LD. I think a Markstrom + Tanev trade is more likely than Hanifin. Especially with the Tanev offers not being awesome so far - if he can upgrade the quality of the assets in return from NJD, that is a better use of the trade chip, IMO.

Because even if NJ had a slip this year their roster is clearly much further along than Calgary’s which is turning in the other direction. The Devils have a TON of youth and high end talent, they need a true number 1 and Marky is that with 2 more years on his contract after this year. Marky wants to win too so I’m sure he’d look at the Devils roster that has multiple 1OA’s, tons of youth in important positions and I think Markstrom would recognize he probably has a better chance to win there than we Calgary for the duration of his contract. It’s not just about this year.

They are 2 games back of Philly with 24 games to go. That is absolutely doable.
Add a good goalie (and maybe Tanev as well), and you energize the team. Do nothing, and you tell the team that this year is a write-off.

The only reason I’m leaning more towards it being Hanifin + Markstrom is because Sec eluded to the deal being one that is complex. Also with the pressure on Fitz right now he needs more then Markstrom remaining next year if he’s to pull off a big trade, an extended Hanifin makes the deal much more palatable should the Devils either miss or have an early exit this year.
I do agree though have Hanifin done in a separate deal from Markstrom is more ideal and likely nets more futures if the Flames can do Marky and Hanifin in different trades.

They're not dead based on simple facts and figures. They are 5 points behind Philly with a game in-hand. If they beat San Jose tomorrow, 3 points back. Philly is 1-3-1 in last 5. Suggesting they are dead and should give up on the season is so weird when there's still 29% of the season to play.

Their recent play could kill the deal altogether.
Additionally it could step the deal back from a larger one involving a rental to just Markstrom who they'd have for 2 1/3 seasons.

I know what roster I'd bet on over the next two years and it isn't the Flames

It could also in turn be what finally convinces them to pull the trigger. There’s just been far too much smoke for the deal to ‘fitzle out’ lol. At least that’s what I’m telling myself lol!
At the end of the day we have a couple weeks left here and will know one way or the other soon; if Markstrom stays with the Flames post deadline it’s not the end of the world but I do think it makes sense to move on from Markstrom at some point here. Wolf needs to be green lit and at the same time the Flames need to bottom out next year to protect their first and keep trajectory for icing an exciting and competitive team in time for the new arena.

People have been betting on the Sabres and Senators taking all their high-end skill and youth becoming a contender for a few years. People would've bet that extending Schiefle and Hellebyuck was the wrong move for the Jets and they should have rebuilt. Vancouver missed the playoffs, made a coaching change, and are now a top team. Nobody would've bet on that.
Betting over multiple years is a crap shoot at best. Just ask Iginla.

That's just not how I (would) look at it. When teams aren't playing well, they don't think 'we suck', they think 'what do we need to do to get going?'
If I'm the GM, and my boss clearly wants/expects playoffs, and I'm 2 games out with 24 games to go, and I have a talented roster that is currently not playing well, and we have one glaring hole in the lineup that everyone is acutely aware of, and there are a couple of really good options available to me to address that problem, throwing in the towel is not how I would handle it.

either of these guys works for me, get it done Sandman!

To add to your point, they also have a game against Philly. Win their game in hand and that game and the difference you need to make up over the course of 22 games is 1 point. NJ currently has 2 more RW so they hold the tie breaker.
