After what was probably their best performance against the oilers in a while, and a feature of that game being how physical the flames played… it makes me wonder if there are any players or prospects that the Flames could target for this season or (more likely) next year that fit the mold of being fast, physical and big (> 6’2”). Not looking for anyone that is a liability defensively and can chip in some offence typical of a fourth line player. Honestly I think Pospisil fits the mold perfectly and I’m wondering if there are any others that fit that player type available with maybe the additional feature of stepping up to fight some of the bigger players in the league.
Definitely not trying to go back to the days of Lucic but just looking for someone that steps up to straighten out someone like Evander Kane when he’s taking too many liberties. Ideally a player with good wheels and is strong on the forecheck.
Can anyone think of a player like that who could be a solid target for a team that’s continuing to get younger and could use some muscle in the bottom half of the lineup? I keep imagining a forward but if there’s a defenceman that fits that mold, the flames are shy on those next year as well.

One player that has recently been in the spotlight is Matt Rempe. I honestly had not heard of him before the last week or so but he has certainly made a name for himself. 21 years old, 6’7”, 240 lbs and is from Calgary. Strong skater and very physical. Little in the way of offence but seems to bring most of what I think the team could use. I know he lost his latest fight but it was his 5th fight in five games. Doubt the Rangers would have any appetite for trading him away especially right now but you never know in the offseason. Wonder what he would cost to acquire.
Would love to find the next Michael Ferland. That guy hit to hurt but also hit clean. And was a force to drop the gloves against. Any players about to break into the NHL or are just starting in the league would be a great target as they would be cost-controlled. Don’t want to have over-pay a 30+ year old journeyman to convince them to come and play in the bottom six. I’d like the flames to avoid over-paying for the “intangibles” going forward. They had a history of paying too much for guys in the bottom half of the lineup and it cost them when they needed that cap space for core players.

If we were to deal with the Rangers, a player that I've suggested before as a possible return is 6'3", 210lb LW Will Cuylle. He's a good skater, plays a physical game with hits aplenty, and will drop his gloves if necessary. He's still finding his way, and developing his game, but he's got a legit chance to be a top-6 player one day. He has a hell of a shot, too.
Dylan Holloway is a Calgary boy, and is fast with a physical game- I still love this kid, even if he never turns into a top-6 player.
Ridly Greig is only a 6-footer, but he's tough, mean, physical, and agitates (as we've seen recently).
Trent Frederic is 25, but he's big (6'3",220), physical, skates well, and will drop the gloves with anyone. He's coming in to his own this season, with 34 points in 59 games so far.
The Sens are apparently shopping former Hitman, 24 year-old, 6'4"C Mark Kastelic, who isn't the best skater, but is industrious and hard-working, excellent in faceoffs, physical, and willing to fight.
St.Louis has a D-man by the name of Tyler Tucker, who is 6'1", 205lbs, 23 years old, and is a bottom-pair defenseman. He skates well, plays heavy, and agitates- will drop the gloves too. Not much offense, but he can move the puck. 16 games, 27 PIM.
Paul Cotter from LV. 6'2",213lbs, 19 points in 57 games, with 37 PIM. He always impresses me.

Even if we could wash the stink off Holloway there should be zero interest in a deal with the Oilers
I would take Frederic and twice on Sundays

This has also occurred to me, and as happy as I am to see the young guys playing so well and coming together, I'm concerned this recent streak may throw a wrench in that plan. I wonder what the vibe of the dressing room would be towards management if you trade Markstrom when they're playing well and within striking distance of the playoffs.
We will see though, hopefully that is not the case.

It’s quiet for a reason. Calgary holds the cards this TDL. Hanifin, Tanev, and potentially Markstrom. Dark horse Vladar if a team wants a goalie at 1/3 of Markstrom’s cap hit and 1/2 the term left.
When Lindholm was dealt, the Jets quickly overpaid for Monahan because the center market is bare. Well, Calgary had the 1st AND second best defenseman on the market. We’re waiting on multiple teams to either cave and accept the deal laid out to them or others to pony up more. It’s basically a silent auction at this rate. Conroy landed a package with Lindholm from being patient. I expect a lot more heated discussions and potential trades when we see the calendar month flip. Some teams, such as the Devils, are just figuring out where they are in the playoff race prior to making deals.

Got to strike when the market is hot. Feels like an offseason thing now. They should make Markstrom the backup down the stretch and ride Vladar. Markstrom playing too well lol

I don't see it. Zadorov, Toffoli, and Lindholm are gone. Markstrom was almost traded.
I think it is quiet because Conroy threatened people if they leaked stuff lol.

Same goes for the buyer. Markstrom isn’t a rental, might have more competition in the summer.

I don't think thee is any chance that Conroy will keep Tanev and Hanifin past the deadline, unless he signs them of course.
Marky will get traded only if Conroy like the deal. Not essential he moves.

It’s hard to know exactly how many trades people want before they accept that Conroy is rebuilding.

Yeah, we will see. Offseason will open up more options for everyone and cap space won’t be as tight. I am still hoping Markstrom gets traded no matter what. Can’t risk an 11th overall pick

The Flames have played well, at times, but inconsistently, since the Philly game on Dec 29th. Here is their bi-polar record since then:
W3
L2
W4
L4
W4
L3
W3
total record 14-9-0
Before that started, they were 12th, 5 points back of 8th
If we just look at the most recent 7-3-0 stretch, before it started they were 13th, 6 points back
Now they are 11th, 5 points back
They are in the exact same spot they have been, for the last 2 months. And there are less than 2 months left. This shows how hard it is to make ground, once you're behind.
Can the Flames make the playoffs? Sure, but don't bet on it unless you're getting 10-1. Will the recent wins derail Conroy? Not a chance.

Guys I think we can declare the Hanifin days are over in Calgary, he's already confirmed he wants to play somewhere with 24/7 summer weather in the U.S.
Now its about maximizing the return which I'm sure Craig is working on.
Everything is on hold until the Calgary moves happen as we hold the top 3 assets @ the deadline.
The only deal I'm not sure gets done now is Markstrom.

If they trade no one, they likely finish the season between 9th and 11th in the West.
After trading Hanifin and Tanev, they will finish the season between 10th and 12th.
If they trade Markstrom too, they are looking at 12th or 13th.
Conroy and company are not fools.
Also, they aren't going to yell it from the treetops, but they have already stated that the plan is to be competitive for the launch of the new building in 2027. They won't advertise that they're rebuilding, but the plan is in place. And everything they have done this year aligns with that plan. I just don't get why people have such little faith.

Everyone was predicting a lower cap for the NFL (including the NFL itself) - so I don't think it was baked in in that case.

Further, reports were the Devils were quite close to making Markstrom a member of the Devils until that fell apart. If it was so close, can it not be revisited? Where is the pivot?
