Hunt with his first as a flame on a great snipe.
Hanifin with a monster game, further upping his trade value.
Hubie with 2 assists, including an incredible pass to Hunt that exposed Nurse and the Oilers D for the tire fire they are. Has 21 pts in his last 22 games.
Kane bitching and chirping the whole game and accomplishing nothing.
Pospisil, Zary and Kadri line continuing to bring it consistently. Pospisil is so hated by other teams and I love it. Kadri enjoying the role of mentor for the rookies. Zary making the scouts look good, just keeps getting better.
Kylington continuing to be a factor in his comeback, chipped in with a helper. Missed that guy and I'm so happy he's back with a smile on his face.
Aside from Pissy running into Vladar and the refs not stopping the play, the striped shirts managed to not ruin the game. Speaking of Pissy, nice effort loser -- takes a selfish penalty helping seal his team's fate. Also, I hope the Flames send the league the video of the attempted spear...what a complete POS.
McDavid 2 pts and a -4, with a couple obvious lack of effort backchecking plays.
At least the Oilers' diarrhea-coloured pants matched their crap-the-bed effort in their own barn.
The Oilers will finally be hitting a tougher part of their schedule and will continue to be exposed as frauds when they take on more playoff-bound teams.
Suck it greasers! GFG!

Great take on the game…. Refs did everything in the first period to help the Oilers. They somehow missed a call for too many men on the ice on the Oilers when they were shorthanded already. Don’t want the Oilers down two men down 2-0 on the scoreboard. Nurse trips Mangie late in the period in front of the Oilers net right in front of the ref. The collision with Vladar should have been a stoppage in play.
What bothers me is how a clean hit by Flames players on Oilers always means the Flames player must fight a Neanderthal Oiler. Caveman way of thinking from the greasers.

McDavid is all world skill, but you can tell he's been coddled his entire life, which hasn't served him well whenever things don't go his way or he encounters any kind of real adversity. Maybe he'll outgrow it some day, but the guy is approaching 30 and he's still being coddled so...

Might that change? Maybe. But right now even though he's on a heater and playing well...its still not great.

Right now I'd say he's only 2 or 3 mil overpaid. Still not matching his contract by any means but not worth some of the rhetoric either

IMO he's an 7-8 mil player making 10.5. Thats definitely not great, but there's worse

There were so many unbelievable moments in that game
Draisaitl running Vladar without consequence
Ekholm boarding and whining about it
Janmark jumping Coleman and getting pummeled for it
Kanes attempted spear
Plus many more I am missing
And
We won!!!
Fantastic!
I still think the chances are good that the oilers miss the playoffs
At which point
Their window slams shut

This really is the question. Needs to be point a game over a season, can’t take 30 or 40 games off.
If he does that, people will stop talking about his contract.

He never took 30-40 games off even when he wasn’t producing. Lots of things caused his mega slump, but a long term lack of effort wasn’t one of them.
People may not stop talking about his contract, but they should. It’s pretty irrelevant, being sunk money that can’t be changed. And especially now, he’s not stopping the team from doing anything they want to contract-wise.

Have to love that Coleman hit on McDavid. Can’t stop watching replays of it. I know it’s easier said than done but playing McDavid that way is so effective. You watch the series the oilers have played against the Avalanche or the Golden Knights… they made it so every bit of contact they could make with McDavid, they made it count. Almost need to make it a rule that you don’t stick check him - only hits… and hit as hard as you can every single time. And give the extra cross check every time you can. Any player that skates off an opportunity to hit him or just swipes their stick at his stick blade should hear from the coaching staff. You have to be relentless on him.
The effect of doing that is cumulative in more than one way… first of all, it grinds him down and makes him want to move the puck off of himself more which makes him carry the puck less. You limit the time he has the puck on his stick and the oilers are effectively a bottom six team in the league. Period. Furthermore, he gets so frustrated by it. He responds by trying to be gritty himself which just takes him to the box with you and also leads to him getting body slammed by Coleman.
Again, it’s easier said than done because all of that works under the principle of playoff hockey that only really happens in the second round these days. The refs tend to actually make more penalty calls in the first round these days… it’s why the oilers have been able to keep making it through to the second round but then bet pummelled in the second round when the refs aren’t looking to give them powerplays anymore. In the first round the oilers can play the simple math that if they get the exact same number of powerplays as the other team, they will likely score on more of them than the other team. Hence, they want the refs as involved in the game as possible.

Even if you're right, and for argument's sake lets say you are..thats 'now.'
Its not likely going to 'get better.'
So, like I said, problematic.

well it's gotten better since last year and the early part of the season. And he has been better before. So why is it unlikely?

Not according to Spector. He "put a lickin'" on Coleman.
Because it's not about how many punches connect. It's about how many you throw apparently.

There has long been a general standard of 10 points per 1 million salary. So a 100 point player should make 10 million. Then there's other factors that add on top of that.
Huberdeau has been playing at an 80-point pace for nearly 2 months. If that stays consistent, he is easily an $8 million player minimum. And that pace is much more in-line with his career totals versus the first 110 games with the Flames.
Cap increases have also upped the 10 points per million.
From that, Huberdeau would be 1.5 - 2 million overpaid at most. He also seems like a great mentor to the younger guys (Pelletier is a notable example). To think that's the worst contract in the entire NHL and stand by it is admonishingly stupid.

Yeah in 6-7 years it's definitely a different conversation. I still maintain it continues to get better before it gets worse

One thing no one has mentioned about the game - the a-hole players were all non-factors or negative factors. Perry, Draisaitl, Kane, all with dumb penalties. Their only good player, in fact, was the only guy I ever see put in consistent effort from that team (Hyman).

Haha! He got a good flail going, but afterward it looked like someone cut off Janmarks face and sewed it back on inside out.

Yup. The Nurse and Vlassic contracts really stand in a league of their own. Vlassic's gets a bit of a pass since it's not hurting the team I guess. But those two are brutal.
Jones, Campbell and Krug round out the bottom 5 imo
