Thing about the Devils making a move for Markstrom even if they are on the outside looking in, they still get him for 2 more seasons, so its not like wasting assets on a rental.

Actually I'll try it. Using the "top 6 scoring forwards" criteria, the top 10 paid forwards have 670 points and are collectively averaging 1.199 PPG. (MacKinnon, McDavid, Panarin, Matthews, Pastrnak, Tavares, Marner, Huberdeau, Barkov, Kopitar).
The bottom 10 paid forwards among this group have 292 points and are collectively averaging 0.554 PPG. (Rossi, Zary, Peterka, Neighbours, Drouin, Joshua, Novak, Chinakhov, Evangelista, Noesen).
So if I have an extra $1 dollar lying around in my cap, I know it's much more likely to pay off by using it on a projected "top-6 scoring forward" than a "starting goaltender".
Highest 30 paid "top-6 scoring forwards" in the league. Sure, there are some duds in there, but far fewer than wasting money on goaltending. They're either on the wrong side of the age curve, or Dubois, which was a reprehensible signing.

Yeah, but they can just punt to the offseason and hope the price comes down

I'm worried they'll see how bipolar he is and the extra 2 years won't be an advantage.

Devils have already wasted assets on a goalie recently.
Markstrom seems to be a good fit for them. When you listen to Woodely talk about the Flames, it makes you feel like Markstrom is also a perfect fit for the Devils. Saros is probably a great fit for the Kings. Brodeur seems to see it the same away with the list that he released.
I think Jersey is a team that can go on a heater given their depth. If I was them, I would trade for Markstrom AND Tanev, though that's would be a rich package. Tampa is playing medioCcre right now, and also lost one of their best defencemen. Philiadelphia is not far out and is also not a team that has been doing exceptional either for a while. Both of those teams can be caught.
There are only a few reasons that make sense to me as to why Fitzgerald would just give up on this season:
1) Conroy's ask for Markstrom was egregiously high (which I doubt)
2) The Devils will want to wait until the off-season and pay up for Ullmark (or someone else that I can't think of that would be better)
I know that if I am Sweeney, I am going to try and trade Ullmark to the west - maybe the Kings. Maybe I would rather trade Ullmark to the dysfunctional Blue Jackets who will probably need a goalie next season too. I would be less inclined to trade him to a team that I would look at as a potential powerhouse in the Devils and who may oust my own team in the playoffs unless I got a much more enticing package out of them.
Acquiring Markstrom right now gives them a chance to make the playoffs this season, plus it gives them an opportunity to figure out their long-term plans (which may still be Daws or Schmid, who are both young and who Woodely both still likes FWIW, or to bring in another young goalie). it also allows the Devils to come out of the gates hard next season even if they don't make it this season. Wins at the start of the season are just as valuable as wins at the end of the season, and having Markstrom comfortable in New Jersey after having finished off the season there and acclimating to his teammates helps them start off on the right foot.
It is a good match both ways. I bet the deal gets done.

So let's just keep this simple Kitties:
Lundell+Gracyn Sawchyn +2025 2nd for Hanifin.

Lundell IMO. Is the 1st round pick in return for Hanifin.

Probably, but we have never tanked and the message from top seems to be that we never will. That approach still got us some super stars over the years.
Flames want to be competitive every year. They keep repeating it. I think that's settled. This strategy of winning the Cup will either work or it won't, but business will thrive and maniacs like us will have lots to talk about.

Yes and still gives them a shot at it this year. Presumably, they picked up Toffoli because they wanted to make a run at the playoffs this year. 24 games left to make up 5 points on the Flyers who have lost Hart. The way Markstrom's been playing, he should be able to steal enough games to make up the difference in that timeframe.

Brent Krahn was on the Fan960 this week and he's not a big fan of Ullmark's because his style is to be a "blocker" goalie. That style works on a team like the Bruins but would it work on a team like the Devils that give up a lot of high-danger opportunities?

That's the thing with the Devils right now. They're six points out of a wildcard spot, but only five points out of a divisional seed. There's probably a better chance that they can overtake Philly than Tampa or Detroit.
But they're not doing it without a goalie, and they could use a good defenceman too.

To be clear NJ goaltending is in no way good, but from everything I'm reading their losses are more to blame on team effort levels. Today's post game presser looked like Lindy Ruff is about ready to get fired too. They have a lot of issues this year, so much so that mortgaging their future to save this year might not be the best plan any longer. It probably was for sure the right move back when the rumors did swirl up a few weeks ago though. Fitz made a miscalculation and that's what happens. At this point even if they traded for Markstrom today he likely can't play for them for another two games, if any of them are losses it's just going to get worse.
Honestly we would absolutely love a huge haul for Marky but think about what we're asking for. That's a huge price to pay when the Devils have so many other problems with their team right now. I think we can hope Fitz panics and still goes through with it but I just don't see it happening for them this season logically anymore.

Not picking on you or anything as it's a personal opinion, but Tkachuk and Gaudreau on the Flames, despite putting up great numbers here and there, I wouldn't call superstars. They did sweet f'all in the playoffs when it counted. Regular season they were cold then hot. They really took off in their last year here.

Devils have the 6th most regulation and OT wins in the East, so would hold the tiebreaker on most teams likely.
I do think they probably feel like they could catch up in 23 games...but honestly if the deal didn't get done the last two times it seemed to get really serious (I heard from somebody it was super close on the day the Flames lost to the Sharks to the point players thought it was happening) then I don't see what changes now to have he deal happen.

re: Hanifin and upping the contract offer.
Given his age, what if the guy has actually taken a permanent step forward?
Would 8x8 get it done?
