So just a head's up, The Walking Dead: Dead City was actually quite enjoyable, and I am currently watching the "Daryl Dixon goes to France" episode 1 which aired tonight.
So far not bad...
Oh TWD...just when I think I'm out...

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
I enjoyed Dead City as well, although I really enjoy those characters and that probably helped.
First episode of Dixon, imo, was really well done. I like that he’s in a different country with foreign/new sets of problems and circumstances.
To me it’s all ready better than the Dead City, most likely because it’s basically new “world” and I’m more intrigued by that.
Dead City was great because, lets be honest, Negan is awesome. And Jeffrey Dean Morgan...well that goes without saying.
I like Darryl, we all like Darryl. So putting him into these circumstances was interesting. Lets see where it goes.
In all honesty though, short-series means that they're spending more time getting to the point. One of TWD's biggest weaknesses was dragging their feet and using filler episodes.

Yeah, being in a new country and seeing how they've evolved after the zombie apocalypse makes it really fresh.
And I chuckled at the expectation that France's stricter gun regulations means that they're forced back to the musket and one-shot rifle era, while Americans are still armed to the teeth.
There are some actors who speak French and know what they're saying and there are some actors simply reciting poorly written lines, and that annoys me.

Location: Close enough to make a beer run during a TV timeout
Exp:
I haven't been watching but I am curious about- do they have Darryl being fluent in French? Or is his character counting on finding people who speak English?

This one.
Yeah Daryl is Daryl and he is totally hopeless at French, so they combine two major tropes.
The first is that Europeans typically are fluent in more than their native language and can translate for him and the second is that compared to the French, Daryl is a highly dangerous and experienced fighter who can essentially take on everything.
These people have largely been hiding while Daryl has been fighting.
The other cool thing is that they're using weapons that have been lying around in museums and stuff, so pikes and muskets etc.
It is The Walking Dead, if you think about it too much the threads start unravelling pretty quickly, but its Daryl! Hard to go too far wrong with Daryl!
Its not brilliant but I'll admit that its been fun.

I've resisted temptation to watch it and get dragged in. I watched the first episode of the Maggie and Negan show and it didn't grab me.
Are the zombies that can open doors and #### in this one?

I cant say that I recall any Zombies opening doors, but there are zombies who can burn you with their touch which is new.
One thing that I've liked about both this show and 'Dead City' with Negan is that they're short-runs.
So we escape a lot of those episodes where nothing moves forward and not much happens. They're 7 episodes so they move on to the point rather quickly as opposed to, oh, I dont know, camping out at a farm for a season and such.

The Daryl series is pretty fun IMO, and it's certainly more interesting than the latter seasons of the original show. The change of scenery adds a unique and fresh element, and Daryl is just such a likeable character. Pretty cool that they actually filmed the show in France.
Dead City was decent as well, mainly because of Jeffrey Dean Morgan. You can tell he just loves playing that character.
