If the rumours are true flames have already opened their wallets to retain him. There are rumours that he is being offered $8 million per now by the flames . It’s in hanifins court now. I personally think he wants to go. I have to think that the trade speculation on trading Markstrom doesn’t help him wanting to stay, among other factors.

True. A random person dropping in on CP would come away with some strange takes on various players.

Eric Francis was on Gregors radio show on Friday. His claim was that after thinking about the Flames offer pretty seriously he decided he's going to the market. Francis speculates that he will end up somewhere in the South where he can go to work in flip flops. Cites Tkachuck as a guy who would advise him on that.
It is Francis so discount as much as you like. But I think it's Chrystal clear that Hanifin has advised the Flames that he wants to go to the marke.
Francis did push back a bit on the notion of the Flames not retaining salary on a Markstrom deal when that came up. He claimed that salary retention in a deal is an option for Conroy. But Conroy and the Flames think that them paying half a salary is worth a fair chunk.
I can see why. Im trading my best player, and you want me to pay half his salary for you the next two plus seasons when his AAV is not out of line with his peers to begin with. I would not give that away either.

Bissonnette and Whitney are brain dead hockey bros. Nothing that comes from that podcast should be taken as anything but sophomoric frat boy humor.

It’s from Matt Murley I think. Point still stands. It’s entertainment not news.

I still would love to see a deal with Dallas involving Bourque
Hanifin would round out their d so nicely
And deals with Dallas seem to work out well for both sides

Miro also plays the right side so he could play the top pairing and likely compliment him very well.
Have to think Dallas would want an extension in place if they were giving up Bourque + other assets.

A Hanifin to Dallas deal has to start with Stankoven.
DAL
Hanifin (50% retained, signed 8 x $7.5MM)
CGY
Stankoven
Bischel
2025 3rd

Really doubt it.
I like Hanifin as much as the next poster but Stankoven is a top 10 prospect league-wide.
Under almost no circumstances do I see Dallas moving Stankoven for a rental.
Bourque is their second best prospect and plays a position that Dallas is already very deep at for the foreseeable future. He is much more expendable.

Then he's not going to Dallas.
Much less adding other pieces.

I can't believe there are multiple posters saying "up the offer" to Hanifin, because he's been playing well.
Don't get me wrong, I think he is a great player (I rate him higher than most people here, I think), but you don't make organizational decisions with that kind of ride-the-momentum, recency bias.
The Flames made a reasonable offer - 8 x $7.5M - which most people thought was either fair or too much, and Hanifin made his decision. Fine. Trade him and get a fair return on the asset.
But now some of you want to up the offer to $8-8.5M at the last minute, just because he's been o a roll. News flash: sometimes guys play well in contract years. Panicking, and throwing the vault at him last minute, is not how you run an organization.

To be clear I didn't mean up the contract offer.
I meant as a GM of a contender trying to win a cup I'd up the trade offer

I completely agree. Besides if he's having so many doubts about staying in CGY, so that an overpayment is the only solution, then he'd be miserable a couple of years into a rebuild.

Again, is there a source for this?:

Assuming for the sake of argument that it's true...

Call me crazy but I'd do Marky and tanev for just Mercer and the 1st if we're comparing offers.
|
You're crazy.
Someone offers their asset for $1M, and you have a similar asset, you don't offer it for $500k, you offer it for $950k
It has been reported multiple times that Jersey prefers Markstrom to Saros, and Brodeur came right out and stated it publicly - it is a fact that they think Markstrom is a better fit for their organization. He also has one more year on
his contract. (yes, Saros is younger).
Carrier is younger than Tanev, but Tanev is better.
Overall, a Markstrom-Tanev package is, at worst, pretty similar to a Saros-Carrier package, and arguably better. NSH asked for Mercer + Casey + Schmid + 2024 1st + 2025 2nd
So why would you ask for Mercer + 1st? The ask should be something like Mercer + Casey + 2024 1st + 2025 3rd. Let them keep Schmid, and if need be, let them keep the 2025 pick (though I wouldn't).
But no way do you drop Casey, Schmid AND the 2nd from the deal. That's just horrible negotiating.
