This should be reckoned for what it is and a failing on him to not have sufficient depth to start the campaign.
I think we'll be a lot better now with the closer alignment of the wranglers. A good seconds should support the ones

Last time I checked the Buffalo Sabres gave Jeff Skinner a huge contract because he played well with Jack Eichel...how did that work?
Signing a guy like Kuzmenko to a contract when he's 29 is always a risky proposition and unless it's less than 3 years and $6M you're going to regret it.
If you give him 5+ years, and $6M+ you probably don't have to worry about a NMC because the contract itself will be a NMC for a guy like him.
The team has organization depth at wing, on the roster, and in the propsects. And will likely add to that with all these picks they have. No team is lacking a Kuzmenko as the difference to being a contender or not. A team that is a contender just moved Kuzmenko because he's not that guy.
He's a guy that is very skilled but IMO isn't a play driver or impact player, the goal for him should be to pump up his value and trade him. Not give him a retirement contract.

Bollig was worth it simply for the ugly Xmas sweater videos he, Bennett and Hamilton made. Was Chucky in one too? Can't remember.

If you look at the other picks that follows:
- Alex Vokov: 46 games
- Mario Ferraro: 303 games.
- Maxime Comtois: 210 games
Actually a pretty good run of players there. You then hae a dry spell the rest of the 2nd round.
Point is - hard to get a good player there.
I like hanging on to 2nds because you can find some impact guys there, but once you are in the mid 40s that becomes really hard.
Not saying the Lazar deal was terrific.
But it gets over-stated as a bad deal.
|
Did Lazar do anything useful for the Flames? I must have missed it
You can trade that 2nd pick for better player. The Flames traded Zadorov for a 3rd. Using your argument the Flames likely got nothing since the 3rd pick is likely a bust than not

Flames scouts at the Devils game. Still circling.
Enough with the foreplay, smoosh booties already.

I thought Bollig was brought in for muscle and grit. He provided neither.

I love where everything is going and like conroy's moves so far but let's not forget that some of that is circumstance (players indicating they will likely leave in free agency)
If he had his original way lindholm and hanifin would be signed to $16mil aav, we'd be near the cap going forward with a core that is clearly nowhere near contending.

If they do land Holtz in a Markstrom trade with NJ, they'll really need to make room for him.
I bet he'd slide in nicely at Mangiapane spot on Backlunds line. Can't think of a better spot honestly.

Yeah but he scored 4 goals through 2 seasons. Well worth that 3rd rounder.

From Pagnotta: https://www.thefourthperiod.com/pagn...-contract-more
Quote:
The New Jersey Devils are expected to circle back with the Calgary Flames and jump back into those Jacob Markstrom discussions. Terms of a trade were initially agreed upon by both General Managers, I’m told, but something broke down at the last minute – I suspect Flames ownership was not interested in paying part of Markstrom’s contract to have him play elsewhere.
As we first reported at the start of the month, Markstrom is willing to sign off on a trade to the Devils. It’s now up to Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald and Flames GM Craig Conroy to agree on revised terms.
Separate sources confirmed the Devils would send forward Alexander Holtz back in a trade with between $2 million and $3 million of Markstrom’s of annual cap hit retained. Markstrom is being paid $8 million in actual salary this season, and $6 million in each of the next two seasons, which includes a $2.5 million lump sum bonus payment each year. In order to make this move work, the two teams are going to have to figure out how to even out the dollars in some fashion.
According to another source, Devils netminder Vitek Vanecek was not going back to Calgary in the initial trade. The Flames plan on moving forward with Dustin Wolf and Dan Vladar between the pipes if Markstrom is moved.

Yep 100% circumstance has forced his hand, but at LEAST he hasn't walked anyone to free agency yet and hasn't spent any picks. If he trades Markstrom that will be a definite sign that the team has entered a culture shift towards rebuilding.

Sounds like teams have charts on the value of retention and either Jersey is lowballing us or we have a higher expectation.
Pagnotta is not reliable at all.

At 50% retained for Markstrom I would really hope it’s mercer coming back not holtz. If it is holtz , it better have devils 1st round pick in 2024 attached to deal. $3 million retained for the next 2 years is a lot. Yes I have heard that Casey could be part of deal , but I rather him and holtz were not and mercer was . Flames need centre depth in a big way.
