Okay, how about we up the offer from our side?
Markstrom 50% retained (or maybe $2M, whatever works)
Tanev
Rooney
1st
Mercer
Casey
The rumoured returns for Tanev are underwhelming anyway, so if adding him pushes NJD to include Mercer and Casey, then I think that's better than a lesser deal here, plus a 2nd and a middling prospect for Tanev elsewhere.
Quality over quantity, and both teams kill it.

Wouldn't we want something more tangible than Casey? Could lose that asset for nothing*.
*I'm not trying to invoke the 'Flames can never sign college kids' trope, but rather that you need to consider player/club control of the asset when gauging value.

Yeah I'd be all over that trade.
I think trading Marky is in "bonus points" territory for Conroy and would should a level of proactive management that we haven't seen in this org before.

I assume they still want to clear money plus they're adding Tanev, so I'd say they add Siegenthaler, Vanecek and a 2nd. I would even return a 3-4th to make it work. I think Venecek bounces back with less pressure, makes it so we can move Vladar and run a tandem with Venecek and Wolf.
So final deal:
Markstrom (50%)
Tanev
Rooney
4th
for
1st
2nd
Mercer
Casey
Siegenthaler
Venecek

Just as a side note, we always change the E=NG threads out at 10,000 posts due to bogging down of server issues, but we're up to 23,300 in this one lol

Pretty sure, at this point anyhow, Mercer is not going to be offered up.....and was likely why the original "trade" didn't materialize.

I am pretty sure Markstrom doesn't end up in NJ without Mercer as part of the return. The original deal didn't materialize because of the asking price in Markstrom's retention.

I’m not so sure, it’s a bit of a dance happening right now. NJD might want to see how the standings play out a bit more to see if they want proceed but you can’t help but look at Mercer played 10 to 12 mins the past 5 or so games and look at his 17:17 ATOI on the year and not wonder if there’s something there. Hard to be sure either way at this point IMO.

I’m captain of the crystallize on Markstrom bus but yeah, if the value isn’t good enough just keep him.

The trades in which a veteran is traded for one very promising prospect tend to be very successful.
Nieuwendyk was (basically) traded for Iginla.
Brassard was (basically) traded for Zibanejad.
Erat was traded for Forsberg.
Pacioretty was traded for Suzuki.
Giroux was basically traded for Tippett.
I'm not opposed to this kind of trade - even if they are risky. And it should be noted that for most of these trades, the team sending the prospect also added a pick or another minor piece.

Just what i have heard and reading between the lines....the retention part is a separate issue.
Conroy already had the "pieces" of the deal to be able to go to Markstrom with, and Holtz was the only "name" player.

Boston's Grzelcyk just got injured and is down the tunnel.
If he's out that's even more pressure on them with Hanifin and Tanev available...

Especially with Hampus Lindholm week-to-week. (Apologies if this was already mentioned.)

More and more teams are getting injured and should be feeling the pressure but none have stepped up to pay the price. Also, more and more teams weaknesses on defence and goaltending are being exposed. It must really take the pressure of the deadline to get these deals done.

Pierre Lebrun updated on the 14th that though the teams had talked that Markstrom has not been asked to waive his NMC yet so I am not sure how he has gone to Markstrom with it. Markstrom's own comments when asked about the noise after the loss to San Jose seems to confirm that as well. Maybe there is stuff I have not heard but the one constant I have heard since this all started blowing up is the hard line for the Flames is Dawson Mercer, everything else is negotiable but not the inclusion of Mercer. The Devils have shopped Holtz around before, if the only roster player was Holtz and the Flames were ok with that I think this deal would have got over the finish line already.

He didnt go to Markstrom with it. He had the pieces (players/assets) he was willing to deal him for and Mercer was not one of them.
But the retention part was never agreed to, therefor he has not approached JM as of yet.

What are the chances NJ and Conroy come up with an agreement and JM says no?
