It really depends on what Mercer and Casey become. I mean if Markstrom gets NJ a cup it is a win for them regardless. I think it works well for both sides.

That's $9.7M of total cap the Flames are eating over the next two seasons:
24-25: $6.7M - $3.0M retention, $3.7m for Vanecek
25-25: $3.0M - $3.0M retention

I don't think taking on Vanecek is a detriment. I would run the rest of the season with Vanecek/Vladar with some games sprinkled in for Wolf and see which of Vladar/Vanecek emerges and run them with Wolf next year.
I don't believe Vanecek is a cap dump.

I would agree. But think it is two pretty highly regarded assets the Flames acquire. Although as we all know highly regarded doesn't always translate to success in the NHL (although Mercer has had success to a degree already)

IF Vanecek gains his form next year, we can trade him at the deadline too! But this means that we need Vladar dumped so we can run Vanecek / Wolf tandem.

yeah, you never know with goalies. Before the season, people thought Markstrom had no value at all ... now we are talking about the great pick/prospect packages he can fetch. Goalies are wild, man. It's also why I want them to move Markstrom now, you never know what he'll do next season.

Woah, 50% retention on Marky? If they are serious, why are we even talking about this NJD deal? I can't imagine the Flames throwing money around like this, that's $3.25 million USD per year!
There is no precedent here for something like that, except to fix big mistakes (coaching payouts).

Conditional Second in 25 (becomes 1st in 26 if Hanafin signs with them)
Both the prospects seem decent.

That sounds like a whole bunch of meh to me.

I think Casey is a reasonable ask for 50% retention.
But I would settle for Hameenaho
Or another 1st

I would be ecstatic with that. Honestly, that would be insane especially from a fan perspective (not our money on retention). Adding in that the 3m cap hit for retention likely not a huge deal in the next couple of years, and it' s a huge win.

I don't personally feel it is either.... but the Flames 100% should be trying to recoup value like it is.
Because they really wouldn't want Vanecek as part of the package, but New Jersey is including him for cap reasons...so you want to make sure you're obtaining value for that.

One thing to co side is Conroy has the other offers out there for other players with other deals. If you have three retention spots and other teams are offering deals involving retention he can’t do this deal in isolation as other deals have to be considered. This sounds obvious but it sounds like none of these deals have knocked his socks off where he has to pull the trigger with now.

Pretty tough to see Tampa being able to put together a package that is fair value for Hanifin with how bare their cupboard is especially if he's going to re-up there. 2026 1st and Howard are their two decent assets futures wise, and then I think Jack Thompson looks like a better almost roster dman than Perbix or Martinson. Late 1st, B+ prospect and tweener dman is still a long ways away from what I'm hoping Hanifin returns though. After that you are into 2nds, 3rd and longer shot prospects

Isaac Howard is the prize in the trade for the Flames. But he's a pure winger. But, after the WJC and his 1st season at Michigan state, It'd be hard to convince he wouldn't be one of the Flames top 3 prospects.
1. WOLF
2. CORONATO
3. HOWARD
4. HONZEK.
Flames really need to target a center or two in their returns.

In other news Vegas has placed Jack Eichel on LTIR for their annual screw the salary cap shenanigans. I fully expect him to be out until game 1 of the playoffs. Look for Vegas to go shopping at the deadline again.

Queue a poster chiming in that Murray will not let Conroy retain as the Flames have never retained on a player in the past. Followed by another post with an example where they did which is then followed by another post about some context around that retention.
I've read this book.

I don’t care what others think, I hope Conroy is calling Edmonton for future potential firsts. Let’s face it, down the road they’re in trouble and I don’t think their GM will be around for it. Trade for future 1st and it could pay dividends for years to come.

Conory talked about quality of quantity and talked about how bad the Dion deal was.
That looks to be the case here.
