What are we buckling up for exactly? Usually when I'm told that the vehicle you know, moves. Quickly. And pretty much immediately.
No one tells me to buckle up, we're going on a trip in 17 days.

I think it's more buckle up for the 17 day rollercoaster game of "Trade?...nope no trade...Trade?...nope no trade...Trade?...nope false alarm...".

He had a hot start with a hot team but since the WJHC break he's been pretty pedestrian. As one of the NHL loans for the world juniors he should have dominated and honestly looked a step behind the entire time.
Perhaps I'm just not that high on him personally, however I feel the guy tops out as a 3rd liner at best.

I think Poitras and a first would be fine for hanifin. IMO I’m treating hanifin as a rental trade. There is probably one or 2 teams he would do sign and trade with at this junction. Whether or not those teams/team want to pay a sign and trade price is debatable. As a rental he should get 1st + +. The + + I’m pretty sure isn’t going to be a blue chip prospect.

Posted this in the Hanifin thread but since Boston was brought up:
Re: Hanifin.
In addition to the Florida based teams, don't count out Boston either. Sweeney has been after him since the 2015 draft when he tried to reportedly trade up for him and Boston media has said there have been talks even this year about him. Also Flames assistant GM Dave Nonis has been scouting the Bruins at TD Garden the last 3 games.

I see people implying a sign and trade for Hanifin increases his trade value. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that applies here. It did for Tkachuk, because he was RFA and only the Flames could sign him for 8 years. If the Flames trade Hanifin, the receiving team can negotiate their own 8 year contract. I don't see any benefit in the "sign and trade" for either side. Again, correct me if I'm wrong.

I suppose the benefit is the assurance that you have him long term.
If you trade for him without the contract, even if he indicates he's inclined to sign with your team, he can easily change his mind. too many variables out of your control as GM at that point.

Poitras has potential in the mold of guys like Cirelli/Danault/Pageau or even the Flames’ own Backlund. Unlikely his offence takes off at this point but every team with Championship aspirations can use a 2/3 defensively dominant all-situations C. Nothing wrong with Poitras forming part of a return.

Nonis scouting the Bruins is somewhat concerning as they have nothing interesting on that roster right now. Poitras is injured and Lohrei is in the minors. Which means Nonis is watching……Carlo? Debrusk (a UFA)? Forbort? Geekie?
Nothing of interest there. The only one of interest is Frederic but I doubt he’s available.
Hopefully Flames are just posturing and getting other teams to up the ante.

Nonis could have just picked Boston to set up base and scout the Stars and Kings as they came through.
3 teams in two games

Agreed, may also be there to have preliminary discussions with the GMs also pertaining to what they are willing to give.
If Conroy is neck deep in negotiations with Jersey, having Nonis establish preliminary talks with other teams involved may be beneficial.

Hanifin would have to be on their roster before the trade deadline to be eligible to sign an 8 year deal with the new team.

Supposedly the team that trades for him would have assurances that Hanifin is interested in signing long-term before they acquire him. The preferable method would be to get those assurances and then negotiate your own contract.

Some Flames fans want this scorched earth rebuild. Trade everyone, get rid of all the vets, etc. That’s exactly what went wrong in Edmonton for a decade and that’s what’s going wrong in Buffalo. You can’t just have a bunch of youngsters and throw them the keys. They need some guidance and direction. Zary and Pospisil have talked about that exact thing when it comes to playing with Kadri. He gives them guidance and leadership. That’s what you need as a rebuilding/retooling club
|
I don't think the scorched earth is wise either but when you have guys like Backlund, Huberdeau, Kadri, Weegar and Andersson around I don't think we have a dearth of veterans.
I would only move him if we got a haul cause he is having a career season. We don't have the depth to move any of our vet C's or D - after Hanifin and Tanev are shipped - and we have a plethora of wingers so it just seemed logical to consider Coleman a trade option.
The other aspect of this is Sharangovich is better off as a winger. When you also consider we have Pelletier and Coronato waiting in the wings it makes one wonder:
Wingers you want to play in the top 9 this year and/or next (6 spots):
Huberdeau
Zary
Coleman
Mangiapane
Pelletier
Sharangovich
Kuzmenko
Pospisil
Coronato
I do believe Mangiapane will get traded but we still have an overabundance of top 9 wingers and this doesn't even factor in the idea of adding a guy like Holtz.
I realize more moves can be made but I get the feeling the Flames want to, and in some cases have no choice but to, hang onto Huberdeau, Zary, Pospisil, Pelletier, Coronato and Sharangovich beyond next season so where is the room to keep them all and give them meaningful minutes?

LeBrun this morning on The Athletic re: Hanifin:
The Noah Hanifin situation has been something else this season. It would appear that he’s in play now. I’m not ready to say 100 percent because I hear the Flames keep trying on an extension, but he hasn’t been willing to sign yet, the clock is ticking to March 8 and there’s no way the Flames let him walk out the door for nothing July 1.
This was always a possibility dating back to the start of the season, especially when he didn’t sign an eight-year offer back in the fall. But the Flames have tried so hard to sign him again lately that teams weren’t sure exactly whether he would be truly available or not. Turns out, he most likely is.
Colleague Chris Johnston during our Insider Trading segment Tuesday evening on TSN said Tampa Bay has interest in Hanifin, which obviously makes sense with Mikhail Sergachev out and his cap hit available to use ahead of the deadline.

Umm that is concerning if they keep trying to sign him and he doesn't want too.
