Ha! Hockey in the 90s... have you ever watched Rock'Em Sock'Em 6?

It includes 1994 Playoff Highlights - in this video it has the Canucks/Flames 1994 "highlights" starting at 11:56 - pretty brutal by today's standards...

Not to mention modern equipment. Put today's players in the same equipment that was used in the 80s and it's night and day. Equipment was so different. Skates were heavy and poorly constructed in comparison. Padding was heavy and offered little protection. Sticks were night and day. You can't compare eras because technology makes them incomparable. It's like trying to compare the golf greats versus today's players. You just can't because of technology.

First YouTube hit for Gretzky highlights. May as well be a different sport! How can you not laugh?

Love that the thumbnail is Gretzky from some old timer event or alumni game....yet still on fire.

If only there were footage of him in his prime somewhere lol

I don't know how, or if you can, embed Reddit videos, but this Teemu Selanne video highlights how brutal it was back then.
Just an ordinary shift from back in the day. There's like seven penalties in 30 seconds there, LOL.

Sorry to dump this into the 80's hockey thread but not sure if it's been mentioned here yet: Serevalli on his DFO podcast yesterday apparently mentioned that he believes Hanifin has expressed his desire to go to Tampa Bay? Yes I know it's Frank and we should take it all with a grain of salt but still.

Not sure how to format:

The word broke this weekend that the Calgary Flames have essentially been told that top defenseman and impending UFA Noah Hanifin will not be re-signing, and he's entered the trade market. But according to Daily Faceoff hockey insider Frank Seravalli on his DFO podcast, the Boston native and former No. 5 overall selection has expressed to Calgary his preferred landing spot, when all is said and done.

"The indication that I have is, if you were to pinpoint it on a map, I think the Hanifan camp has expressed to the Flames that he has interest in signing in Tampa Bay... I don't know how mutual it is, but the Lightning are in need of defense."

Kind of ridiculous for Frank to "leak" this if its true. Way to show your Oilers homerism by trying to destroy any leverage the flames may have

Hey Tampa, you want a signed Noah? Give us Calgary boy Brayden Point in return, you cowards!

Still blows my mind that Cherry had his own YouTube channel on VHS before YouTube was even a thing lol.

Also, that reminds me of my all-time favourite EA NHL intro video:

Wow I was at Game 7 v VAN where Bure scored in OT. We were up 3-1 in the series and lost Games 5, 6 and 7 in OT.

Crazy.

It's hard for me to pick 5. Growing up I cheered for Av's cause the Flames were bad and I wanted a playoff team to root for and all the guys I kinda liked played for their biggest rivals - Vernon (too young to appreciate him here) and Hasek in DET and Belfour in DAL. Even Broduer in NJ.

Those 4 teams dominated the league for a solid stretch of years. Still think that decade or so is one of the greatest times in hockey.

Using the clapper often enough to get people to bite so hard on the fake is a totally lost art. Virtually no forwards use a slap shot at all anymore, probably because new age defensemen are fast enough to strip the puck almost immediately upon attempt, but it's really stark seeing that move over and over again.

The only thing I can think of that's close to that clapper fake is actually Johnny and his goal line shot. He used it often enough that Goalies would definitely glue themselves pretty inappropriately to the post when he was below goal line. IMO this opened up way more shots for Monahan and Lindholm than we were aware of at the time.

I saw loads of those games. The bench-clearing brawls were excellent!! And typically there was some pretty darn good hitting!!

And the Oilers were still No Good but they did have that Gret guy and all the rest of the OBC.

Belfour doesn't get nearly enough recognition that he deserves for his time in the same Era as the other goat goalies. That's all I have to add to this conversation.

I think it's a mistake to trade Hanifin without getting a 1st round pick, no matter the other player(s), prospect(s) involved. Tampa is without a first this year and next, so the fit isn't great unless it's a multiple team deal.

On Insider trading, Chris Johnston says that Hanifin is most likely going to a US team because it is believed he doesn't want to sign in Canada.

Said to keep an eye on the Lightning because of Sergachev injury.
