Taking a while to get to 5000

Steinberg mentioned yesterday on the post game show that it was quiet around Markstrom and had been that way for a while now.
Theres your update.

Ya, that was a bit of a deflating comment. But really that trade with NJ seems to have a lot of postering going on.

We still have a couple more weeks until the TDL. I wasn’t really expecting anything until then anyway.

Way too much smoke around that Devil deal for it to be dead in my opinion. Especially with the Devils walked away reports followed by the Devils called back.
It's a see who blinks game, but the deal will get done (just opinion).

It seems like a deal that has to be made.
Way too much talk around it, names floated out.
Seemed like that Jack Eichel trade. The destination was obvious. Just a lot of talk that the deal would be done daily and it was quiet until it wasn’t.

Francis was under the same impression on Friday night on Flames Talk. He said he believes it will get done sooner rather than later.

That’s exactly it I think. There’s a deal on the table and there’s a sticking point. One side will likely have to blink and it gets across the finish line. I’m thinking Conroy is the one to blink and today is the day.

All the big name insiders had it.
Guys in jersey had it.
We had our insiders here on it.
Markstrom goes from starter to no pre game skate and the bench.
Hands out pucks to fans before the game.
That was close to done.
Something happened, but guessing you don't go that far down the road without having a pretty strong chance it still gets done.

With a few days off for the Flames, I doubt Conroy blinks today - zero rush for him at the moment...

Hypothetically what is the number of 5th and 6th round picks one would take to get Tanev? 3 years worth?

Maybe five years worth. On average that gets you 1-2 NHLers probably per draft, but does even one of them became a second pair d?
Nah, I still wouldn’t do it even with our scouts.
Such a Flames LeFs deal though. Leafs get the best player, Flames get a whole bunch of magic beans, projects, crap.

Harman Dayal and Max Bultman from the Athletic (non-insiders) speculated on trades involving Tanev and Markstrom.
I won't share any more details other than the actual trade proposals because the article is behind a paywall, but here are the trade proposals:
Tanev (50% retained) to Dallas for 2024 2nd, Ty Dellandrea, 2026 4th; and
Markstrom (25% retained) to New Jersey for 2025 2nd + Alexander Holtz.
My opinions:
The return for Tanev feels pretty underwhelming. Dellandrea looks like a bottom-6 center to me. He's 23. Maybe there's a little bit of upside there? Maybe? The 2nd and the 4th are also long shots. So, I could see this return going nowhere, although who knows with draft picks? Maybe the Flames make a great pick. But that's a lot of maybes.
The return for Markstrom also feels underwhelming, but I'm willing to acknowledge my expectations might be too high. Holtz feels like a good get. He's currently playing on the Devils 4th line. So, I would be excited to see if more opportunity could cause the 2020 7th overall pick to explode. Also, RH RW, which is a rare commodity. It would be nice to have two young ones with potential, in Holtz and Coronato. However, I want a center! We already have a lot of prospects on the wings.
What are your opinions?

I will believe the deal will get done until New Jersey acquires Markstrom (or another goalie). They are in pretty desperate need of a goalie.

Unless the offers are exceptional (like Lindholm level), there is zero reason to make a deal now. You wait until the deadline and take the best available offer leveraging the teams against one another, as well as your 3 retentions for salary.
GMs of contending teams + Edm are going to pucker as the reach those last hours to improve their squads... especially as they look at the moves other teams are making.
That's a recipe for a haul, and it's not going to lessen between now and the deadline.

This is exactly it. There is substantial runway to the trade deadline, so you aren't getting GMs going all in yet. They are still holding back trying to see if they can reduce the cost. I think that is why Fitzgerald tried to make some sort of artificial deadline last week by saying there is a time limit on the offer. Obviously Conroy didn't blink and here we are. Dollars to donuts that Fitzgerald calls back again. He may wait a bit closer to the deadline to sweat Conroy a bit, but he will be back.

Feels obvious but I think the angst from our fanbase is just the concern that someone is going to get hurt and the chance to move the players for any sort of haul will be missed.
So while logic says wait it out, the Flames fan inside us all is screaming to get these done ASAP before someone gets hurt.
Having been on the receiving end of a good (if not great) deal for Lindholm also adds to the internal fan pressure to see trades made. Didn't have to wait that one out.
All this emotional manipulation we're allowing ourselves to be out through with every update from the Friedman's of the world also isn't helping.

So far, the two most important lessons I've learned about Craig Conroy the GM:
(1) He is patient (ex: patiently waiting for Lindholm or Hanifin to re-sign/to make the decision to trade Lindholm and Hanifin), and
(2) He is good at player evaluation (ex: picks in rounds 2-3 last draft, waiver claims, Sharangovich).
